Poly-(alkylcyanoacrylate) ester particles have been used for the preparation of different formulations ranging from ophthalmic delivery systems to cancer chemotherapy carriers in clinic. The aim of this study was to prepare and characterize poly-(methyl ethyl cyanoacrylate) (PMECA) particles containing 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). PMECA particles were prepared using the inverse emulsification...

Isolated human colonic epithelial cell suspensions were incubated with either 0.1 mM 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) or 0.1 mM acetylaminosalicylic acid (Ac-ASA) for up to two hours. Intra- and extracellular 5-ASA and Ac-ASA were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. Mean 5-ASA uptake in one hour was 160.5 nmol/g dry weight, compared with an Ac-ASA uptake of only 5.75 nmol/g dry wei...

Authors' objectives To perform a systematic review of the efficacy of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) compounds (oral and topical) in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), both ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), in the acute phase for inducing remission and for the prevention of relapses or recurrences. Also, to evaluate the influence of several factors (such as dosage...

The incorporation of functionalised carbon nanodots within a novel low molecular weight salt hydrogel derived from 5-aminosalicylic acid is reported. The carbon dots result in markedly enhanced gelation properties, while inclusion within the hydrophobic gel results in a dramatic fluorescence enhancement for the carbon nanomaterials. The resulting hybrid CD gels exhibit a useful sensor response ...

Mesalazine- (5-aminosalicylic acid-) containing products are a well-known treatment for inflammatory bowel disease, often as first line. Myocarditis is recognized as a very rare possible side effect of this drug treatment. We present a case of mesalazine-induced myopericarditis that was successfully improved by immediate cessation of the medication.

AIM To assess patients' understanding for the reasons for taking 5-aminosalicylic acid or ursodeoxycholic acid as chemoprophylaxis against colorectal carcinoma associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS A questionnaire-based study using a 5-point opinion scale was performed. One hundred and ninety-two patients with colitis only and 74 patients with primary sclerosing cholangiti...

BACKGROUND With greater use of immunomodulators in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), it is uncertain whether concurrent therapy with both 5-aminosalicylic acid [5-ASA, mesalazine (mesalamine)] and an immunomodulator is necessary. AIM To determine whether concurrent therapy with both 5-ASA and immunomodulator(s) improves outcomes in IBD. METHODS Systematic review with search terms 'azathiopr...

PHARMACOLOGY Pharmacotherapeutic group: Intestinal anti-inflammatory agents (A07 EC02). Actions: It has been established that mesalazine is the active component of sulfasalazine, which is used for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Based on clinical results, the therapeutic value of mesalazine after oral as well as rectal administration appears to be due to a local effect ...

5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) is an effective drug for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. A large group of flavonoids was investigated for their inhibitory effects on the N-acetyl-conjugation of 5-ASA in rat hepatocytes and subcellular preparations. When added to cultured hepatocytes, some flavonoids inhibited the production of N-acetyl-5-aminosalicylic acid (5-AcASA) with...
