Terpene profile of Muscat wines fermented by Saccharomyces species and hybrid yeasts was investigated. The amount of geraniol decreased in most wines with respect to the initial must except for Saccharomyces bayanus wines. On the other hand, alpha-terpineol amount was higher in wines fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae and hybrid yeasts. The amount of linalool was similar in all wines and com...

The essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The mechanisms of action of tea tree oil and three of its components, 1,8-cineole, terpinen-4-ol, and alpha-terpineol, against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 9144 were investigated. Treatment with these agents at their MICs and two times their MICs, particularly treatment with terpinen-4-ol and alpha-t...

Essential oils are complex natural mixtures, their main constituents, e.g. terpenes and phenylpropanoids, being responsible for their biological properties. Essential oils from eucalyptus, tea tree and thyme and their major monoterpene compounds alpha-terpinene, gamma-terpinene, alpha-pinene, p-cymene, terpinen-4-ol, alpha-terpineol, thymol, citral and 1,8-cineole were examined for their antivi...

The identification of four further major constituents of the pedal gland exudate of the bontebok, Damaliscus dorcas dorcas, viz. alpha-terpineol, 2-n-heptylpyridine, m-cresol and (A)-6-dodecen-4-olide and the investigation of the stereochemistry of the double bond in (Z)-6-dodecen-4-olide by means of iterative computer analysis are described. An improved synthesis of this compound is outlined.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurological disorder in which the neuronal degeneration associated with inflammatory processes and oxidative stress. Since alpha-terpineol was shown to possess antioxidant anti-inflammatory effects, administration of this compound studied on rat model AD. To create model, Aβ1-42 injected into hippocampus male Wistar rats. Generated AD models were divided simple sh...

PURPOSE The main purpose of this study was to demonstrate the anticancer effects of 4-terpineol against Hep-G2 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells by evaluating its effect on apoptosis induction, cell migration, DNA fragmentation and cell cycle phase distribution. METHODS MTT assay was used to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of 4-terpineol on Hep-G2 cells, while fluorescence microscopy and flo...

The antibacterial effect of α-terpineol from Cinnamomum longepaniculatum (Gamble) N. Chao leaf essential oils were studied with special reference to the mechanism of inhibiting the standard strain of Escherichia coli (CMCC (B) 44102) growth at ultrastructural level. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) and time-kill curves of α-terpineol were deter...
