This abstract outlines current developments of a micro-assembly facility focusing on studies using a three fingered gripper. Individual fingers of the gripper comprise thin fibers ranging in diameter from 7 to 80 μm that are attached to quartz based oscillators and are capable of sensing proximity, contact, and controlling adhesion forces. To optimize gripper finger performance, an electrolytic...

amyloid-β (aβ) self-assembly into cross-β amyloidfibrils is implicated in a causative role in alzheimer’s disease pathology.uncertainties persist regarding the mechanisms of amyloid self assembly and the role of metastable prefibrillar aggregates. aβ fibrilsfeature a sheet-turn-sheet motif in the constituent β-strands; as such, turn nucleation has been proposed as a rate-limiting step in the se...

This paper deals with the design of the welding fixture for the head end sub-assembly of a rocket motor case. The head end sub-assembly consists of four parts namely Y-Ring, Dome, Igniter Boss and the Fore skirt ring that have to be welded to each other with a specified tolerance and weld quality. The material used in the manufacture of different parts of head end sub-assembly is Maraging steel...

I recent years there has been a growing concern over the congested conditions of our urban highway facilities. The continuing escalation of adverse driving conditions in major urban areas has generated a feeling of discontent among automobile owners and transportation planners alike. One major factor that has contributed to this feeling of dissatisfaction is the rapid pace with which many of th...

The microbial burden of the Phoenix spacecraft assembly environment was assessed in a systematic manner via several cultivation-based techniques and a suite of NASA-certified, cultivation-independent biomolecule-based detection assays. Extremotolerant bacteria that could potentially survive conditions experienced en route to Mars or on the planet's surface were isolated with a series of cultiva...

The determination of the optimal carrying capacity procurement of rail and shipping services in the automobile intermodal network with unique characteristics is essential to save automobile delivery cost. In this research we develop a two-stage stochastic programming model for the tactical-level decision problem arising in the special automobile intermodal network. Furthermore, we improve the s...

We report here the genome sequence of Thauera sp. strain SWB20, isolated from a Singaporean wastewater treatment facility using gel microdroplets (GMDs) and single-cell genomics (SCG). This approach provided a single clonal microcolony that was sufficient to obtain a 4.9-Mbp genome assembly of an ecologically relevant Thauera species.

This paper explores how people process information on low probability-high consequence negative events and what it will take to get individuals to be sensitive to the likelihood of these types of accidents or disasters. In a set of experiments, information is presented to individuals on the likelihood of serious accidents from a chemical facility. Comparisons are made with other risks, such as ...
