Twelve patients with systemic sclerosis (SS) and severe Raynaud's phenomenon received infusions of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) at a dose of 6-10 ng/kg/min, with either saline or 5% dextrose, for 72 hours in a single-blind cross-over study. The infusions were administered intravenously by centrally positioned catheters. Infusions were well tolerated with only mild side effects. Following the PGE1 in...

OBJECTIVE In critically ill patients receiving mechanical ventilation, daily interruption of sedative infusions decreases duration of mechanical ventilation and intensive care unit length of stay. Whether this sedation strategy reduces the incidence of complications commonly associated with critical illness is not known. DESIGN Blinded, retrospective chart review. SETTING University-based h...

We examined the effects of exogenous cortisol on plasma immunoreactive adrenocorticotropic hormone (iACTH), bioactive ACTH (bACTH), and ACTH-(1-39) in nine adrenalectomized fetuses at 126-130 and 136-140 days of gestation. Fetuses received 4 h of cortisol (2 μg ⋅ kg-1 ⋅ min-1) or saline infusions on consecutive days. Blood was obtained before and at intervals during infusions. Arterial blood ga...

In order to investigate bacterial contamination of i.v. anaesthetic agents, given by infusion to critically ill patients, we have cultured residual infusion fluid from infusion syringes, 50 containing midazolam and 50 propofol. The infusions had been prepared with routine aseptic precautions and had been running for between 0.75 and 21.25 h. Only scanty growths of Staphylococcus epidermidis wer...

BACKGROUND We investigated the extent and frequency of dose errors and treatment delays made as a consequence of preparing drug infusions at the bedside, rather than using pre-filled syringes. METHODS Forty-eight nurses with critical care experience volunteered to take part in this randomized, blinded, controlled study conducted in the simulation centre of an urban hospital. They assisted in ...

The use of ketamine infusion for sedation/analgesia in patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy has not been described. The aims of this retrospective cohort study were to explore whether ketamine infusion for patients requiring ECMO therapy was associated with altered RASS scores, decreased concurrent sedative or opioid use, or with changes in vasopressor requireme...

Thirteen children with hyperkalaemia were treated by intravenous infusions of salbutamol, 4 micrograms/kg over 20 minutes. Reductions in the mean (SD) plasma potassium concentrations, of 1.48 (0.5) and 1.64 (0.5) mmol/l were obtained at 40 and 120 minutes, respectively, after completion of the infusions. No side effects were noted.
