Physics goals of the STAR Experiment at RHIC in recent (and future) years drive the need to operate the STAR TPC at ever higher luminosities, leading to increased ionization levels in the TPC gas. The resulting ionic space charge introduces field distortions in the detector which impact tracking performance. Further complications arise from ionic charge leakage into the main TPC volume from the...

While various relationships between productivity and biodiversity are found in forests, the processes underlying these relationships remain unclear and theory struggles to coherently explain them. In this work, we analyse diversity-productivity relationships through an examination of forest structure (described by basal area and tree height heterogeneity). We use a new modelling approach, calle...

Implementing IT (information technology) systems such as ERP (enterprise resource planning) requires huge investments. Measuring the impact of these investments on productivity and profitability is extremely important for business managers. Many studies have failed to show the direct relationship between IT investments, organizational productivity and profitability, a phenomenon known as produc...

This note describes a study on the momentum resolution of the TPC-based central tracker design which will be included in the ECFA/DESY conceptual design report (CDR) for the proposed DESY 500 GeV electron-positron linear collider. The study found it to be likely that the central tracker could achieve a momentum resolution of approximately 10 −4 (GeV/c) −1 , particularly if a layer of silicon mi...

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of energy expenditure rate on work productivity performance at different levels of production standard time. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty industrial workers performed repetitive tasks at three different levels of production standard time, normal, hard, and very hard. Work productivity and energy expenditure rate were recorded d...

Predator-prey communities are ubiquitous in ecology, but introduced predators can drive native species to extinction within island systems, prompting the eradication of such exotics. Ecological theory predicts that elimination of top-introduced predators from islands can lead to the counterintuitive decline of native prey populations through the ecological release of smaller introduced species ...

This paper examines the current food crises, the projected effect of climate change, the vulnerabilities created by regional concentrations of food production, imports and exports, and the significant role of women as food producers, consumers and family food managers. Bridging productivity differentials between male and female farmers, by helping women overcome production constraints, would si...

The online drift velocity calibration method provides calibration parameters required at the very beginning of the offline reconstruction process in order to determine the z position of the particle tracks with a sufficient accuracy before the combined track finding [2]. It uses the TPC Laser System which generates 336 straight laser tracks, similar to ionizing particle tracks, at known positio...

We discuss the major scientific issues of the search for proton decay to 10 years lifetime and search for CP violation with a VLBL superbeam ( 2000 km distance). The 100 kT LANNDD liquid Argon TPC is well matched to these goals. We describe the progress in the R&D program for the detector as well as the possible location in an underground laboratory in the USA called DUSEL.

The need to accelerate the selection of crop genotypes that are both resistant to and productive under abiotic stress is enhanced by global warming and the increase in demand for food by a growing world population. In this paper, we propose a new method for evaluation of wheat genotypes in terms of their resilience to stress and their production capacity. The method quantifies the components of...
