Phylogeny reconstruction is too complex a combinatorial problem for an exhaustive search, because the number of possible solutions increases exponentially with the number of taxa involved. In this paper, we adopt the parsimony principle and design a tabu search algorithm for finding a most parsimonious phylogeny tree. A special array structure is employed to represent the topology of trees and ...

We describe the use of a tabu search algorithm for generating near minimum dominating sets in graphs. We demonstrate the eeectiveness of this algorithm by considering a previously studied class of graphs, the so-called \football pool" graphs, and improving many of the known upper bounds for this class.

We consider the problem of designing self-healing rings in order to protect the transmission of telecommunication demands in a zonal network. This problem stems from a real application with operational constraints such as dual homing and hop limit per ring. A modeling approach taking into account ring interactions is proposed as well as a tabu search heuristic for solving it. Computational resu...

This paper describes a Diversification-Driven Tabu Search (D2TS) algorithm for solving unconstrained binary quadratic problems. D2TS is distinguished by the introduction of a perturbation-based diversification strategy guided by longterm memory. The performance of the proposed algorithm is assessed on the largest instances from theORLIB library (up to 2500 variables) as well as still larger ins...

In this paper we tackle a two-echelon location-routing problem (2E-LRP) by a tabu search metaheuristic. The aim is to define the location and number of two kinds of capacitated facilities, the size of two different vehicle fleets and the related routes on each echelon. The proposed Tabu Search (TS) for the 2E-LRP is based on the decomposition of the problem in two location-routing sub-problems,...

In this paper the problem of designing optimal logical topologies for WDM networks using the tabu search meta-heuristic has been considered. For a given physical topology and requests for data communication at specified rates between different pairs of nodes in the network, our objective is to obtain a logical topology, using the tabu search, to minimize the network congestion.

Given a finite set of three-dimensional boxes in different sizes and an unlimited set of containers in the same size, the cargo loading problem is to determine the minimum number of containers that can contain all the boxes. The problem is NP-hard. In this paper, we propose to use Tabu search optimization with a tree-based heuristic cargo loading algorithm as its inner heuristic to solve this p...

In this paper we consider discrete-continuous scheduling problems defined in [7], where general results and methodology have been presented as well. These problems are characterized by the fact that each job simultaneously requires for its processing at a time discrete and continuous (i.e. continuouslydivisible) resources. We deal with a class of these problems where there are: one discrete res...

In the Berth Allocation Problem (BAP) the aim is to optimally schedule and assign ships to berthing areas along a quay. The objective is the minimization of the total (weighted) service time for all ships, defined as the time elapsed between the arrival in the harbor and the completion of handling. Two versions of the BAP are considered: the discrete case and the continuous case. The discrete c...
