Introduction To date there are still many unknowns on how particles are formed from gas phase reactive systems such as combustion. It is possible to study particles in-situ using X-ray scattering techniques: Separate applications have shown that the size distribution of soot particle can be measured using Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) [1-4] and particle structure with Wide-Angle X-ray Sca...

We present a neural network method to calibrate automatically a commercial robot after undergoing wear or damage, which works on top of the nominal inverse kinematics embedded in its controller.

We present the rst prototype of a tool based on a supervised neural network for the detection of fraud in mobile communications. This prototype is being developed in the framework of a project of the Euro-pean Commission on Advanced Security for Personal Communications (ASPeCT) 1 , together with two other prototypes, based on unsupervised neural networks and knowledge-based systems.

Rehabilitation of the hands is critical for the restoration of independence in activities of daily living for individuals exhibiting disabilities of the upper extremities. There is initial evidence that robotic devices with force-control-based strategies can help in effective rehabilitation of human limbs. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of the existing hand exoskeletons allow for a...

Artificial transcription factors can be rapidly constructed from predefined zinc-finger modules to regulate virtually any gene. Stable, heritable up- and downregulation of endogenous genes has been demonstrated in transgenic plants. These advances promise new approaches for creating functional knockouts and conditional overexpression, and for other gene discovery and manipulation applications i...

An artificial phosphopeptide recognized the difference between methylated and hydroxymethylated cytosines in DNA. The Sp1 zinc finger peptide substituted by phosphotyrosine effectively discriminated between 5-methylcytosine, 5-hydroxymethylcytosine ((hm)C) and unmethylated cytosine. The DNA recognition properties of the peptide differ from those of other chemicals that detect (hm)C.

For the first time, artificial cellulosome structures were created on DNA scaffolds based on zinc finger protein (ZFP)-guided assembly. These resulting two-component cellulosome structures exhibited enhancement in cellulose hydrolysis compared to the non-complexed mixture depending on the number of CBMs and cellulases assembled.

Artificial intelligence research and video games are a natural match, and academia is a fertile place to blend game production and academic research. Game development tools and processes are valuable for applied AI research projects, and university departments can create opportunities for student-led, team-based project work that draws on students’ interest i n video games. The Digital Media Co...

This paper deals with development of compliant artificial finger skin surface ridges with a pair of PVDF film strips embedded in each of them as sensing transducers for incipient slip detection in pursuit of elucidating the mechanism of human static friction sensing. We describe design and manufacture of the surface ridges and distinctive detection of incipient slip from rolling.
