Basic language-inherent tempo cannot be isolated by the current metrics of speech rhythm. Here we propose the number of syllables per intonation unit as an appropriate measure, also for large-scale comparisons between languages. Applying it to an extended sample of in the meantime 51 languages has not only corroborated our previously reported negative cross-linguistic correlation of this metric...

The need for a measure of correlation between two membership functions is stated. The properties that the correlation measure may possess are examined . A measure of correlation is defined on the basis of those properties. The definition is extended to the cases when (a) the domain is finite and (b) the domain is a subset of R ". The problems encountered while extending the definition are also ...

Considered is the distribution of the crosscorrelation between m-sequences of length 2−1, where m = 2k, and m-sequences of shorter length 2 − 1. New pairs of m-sequences with three-valued crosscorrelation are found and the complete correlation distribution is determined. Finally, we conjecture that there are no more cases with a three-valued crosscorrelation apart from the ones proven here.

We investigate the two components of the total daily return (close-to-close), the overnight return (close-to-open), and the daytime return (open-to-close), as well as the corresponding volatilities of the 2215 New York Stock Exchange stocks for the 20 year period from 1988 to 2007. The tail distribution of the volatility, the long-term memory in the sequence, and the cross correlation between d...

Interpersonal coordination represents a very common phenomenon in daily-life activities. Three theoretical frameworks have been proposed to account for synchronization processes in such situations: the information processing approach, the coordination dynamics perspective, and the complexity matching effect. On the basis of a theoretical analysis of these frameworks, we propose three statistica...

A wide variety of acoustic systems has multiple sources and receivers. This paper proposes a technique for making acoustic measurements simultaneously for multiple sources. The proposed technique features a collection of excitation signals of the maximum-length sequence (MLS) and MLS-related classes. Each signal in the set has a pulse-like autocorrelation function, and the cross-correlation fun...
