The main mechanisms by which Campylobacter jejuni causes diarrhea are unknown. In contrast to a recent communication, we report here the absence of an association with the plasmid pVir in patients infected with C. jejuni who developed bloody diarrhea in The Netherlands, and we suggest a role for other virulence determinants.
Aims & Objectives The aim of this study is to evaluate genetic relatedness, antibiotic resistance pattern, and virulence characteristics of different types of S. aureus isolated from air, surfaces, staff, and patients in a Public hospital in Ilam. Methods & Materials A total of 88 of 140 staphylococci identified as S. aureus by conventional and molecular methods were used in this study. Isola...
OBJECTIVE To characterize the epidemiologic burden and the molecular determinants of group A streptococcal (GAS) meningitis among the pediatric population of the state of Paraná, Brazil. METHODS Clinical and epidemiologic data were gathered by a compulsory notification system during the period 2003 to 2011. Bacterial identification, antibiotic resistance profile, emm-typing, pulsed-field gel ...
Acinetobacter baumannii is an important human pathogen due to its multi-drug resistance. In this study, the genome of an ST10 outbreak A. baumannii isolate LAC-4 was completely sequenced to better understand its epidemiology, antibiotic resistance genetic determinants and potential virulence factors. Compared with 20 other complete genomes of A. baumannii, LAC-4 genome harbors at least 12 copie...
There is limited information concerning the nature and extent of the immune response to the virulence determinants of Yersinia pestis during the course of plague infection. In this study, we evaluated the humoral immune response of mice that survived lethal Y. pestis aerosol challenge after antibiotic treatment. Such a model may replicate the clinical situation in humans and indicate which viru...
Listeria monocytogenes is an intracellular bacterial pathogen that causes life-threatening disease. The mechanisms used by L. monocytogenes to invade non-professional phagocytic cells are not fully understood. In addition to the requirement of bacterial determinants, host cell conditions profoundly influence infection. Here, we have shown that inhibition of the RhoA/ROCK pathway by pharmacologi...
BACKGROUND Current evidence consistently confirm inequalities in health status among socioeconomic none, gender, ethnicity, geographical area and other social determinants of health (SDH), which adversely influence health ofthe population. SDH refer to a wide range of factors not limited to social component, but also involve economic, cultural, educational, political or environmental problems. Me...
We have examined 136 isolates of Yersinia species, comprising 112 strains of Yersinia enterocolitica, 12 of Y. frederiksenii, 8 of Y. intermedia, and 5 of Y. kristensenii, for the presence of 40- to 50-megadalton virulence-associated plasmids and expression of the following plasmid-associated characteristics: Congo red pigmentation (CR), calcium dependence, autoagglutination, hydrophobicity, re...
We report the draft genome sequence of the bacteriocin producer Enterococcus faecium strain CRL 1879, isolated from a northwestern Argentinian artisanal cheese. The draft genome sequence is composed of 73 contigs for 2,886,747 bp, with 3,140 protein-coding genes. Six biosynthetic clusters for bacteriocin class II production were found. Typical virulence determinants, which have relevance in foo...
The Kokobera group of flaviviruses circulates in Australia and Papua, New Guinea, and has been associated with occasional human polyarticular disease. To facilitate future studies to identify virulence determinants, the complete coding regions of the Stratford virus, and isolates of the Bainyik virus and Torres virus were obtained.
