[Prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss in metallurgical company].
OBJECTIVE To analyze the prevalence of cases suggestive of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) among metalworkers who were potentially exposed to occupational noise (from 83 to 102 dB). METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out in a metalworking company providing services in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Clinical and occupational data on 182 workers who were active between November 2001 and March 2002 were obtained from the company's Hearing Conservation Program and analyzed. In order to characterize the noise exposure status within the work environment, the acoustic classifications from the operating units of the client companies were used, due to difficulty in quantification at an individual level. Associations between these cases and variables such as age, length of service in the company, length of exposure to occupational noise and degree of use of individual protection equipment were tested by means of prevalence ratios and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The prevalence of cases suggestive of NIHL was 15.9% and significant associations (p<0.05) were identified from multivariate analysis between these cases and the variables of age and degree of use of individual protection equipment. CONCLUSIONS The results found contribute towards better understanding of the behavior of some of the main characteristics of NIHL, in a particular situation of the organizing of work that is relatively common in the Brazilian industrial context.
Prevalence of noise induced hearing loss among vehicle drivers at Bandar Abbas freight terminal, south of Iran
Background: Traffic noise is one of the major sources of environmental pollution that can cause permanent or temporary loss of hearing in drivers. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of hearing loss among professional long-distance drivers in Bandar Abbas freight terminal. Methods: One thousand long distance occupational drivers in Bandar Abbas freight terminal not certifie...متن کامل
Occupational noise induced hearing loss in coal miners and coal washing factory workers in Kerman province
Introduction: The occupational noise induced hearing loss is one of the wide spread problems and a long term complication of working in noisy environments. At the present, large groups of workers who are working in noisy environments are exposed to hearing loss. So, this study is aimed to determine the prevalence of hearing loss (more than, 25 dB) of the workers in coal mines and leaching fac...متن کامل
Background: Noise-induced hearing loss is a sensorineural hearing loss, which is associated with exposure to high levels of sound. Since train drivers exposed to high noise levels and the use of hearing protection devices is relatively difficult and they also need to hear the radio communications, this study examines the hearing status of train drivers of Yazd Railway Company. Methods: This i...متن کامل
Objective(s): Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the major cause of acquired hearing loss. Celecoxib, a cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor, is a non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drug (NSAID) with known antioxidant and antineoplastic activity. Therefore, we monitored the extent of temporary noise- induced threshold shifts (TTS) and cochlear damage caused by high level 4- kHz noise exposure t...متن کامل
