چکیده

BACKGROUND The question of how many marine species exist is important because it provides a metric for how much we do and do not know about life in the oceans. We have compiled the first register of the marine species of the world and used this baseline to estimate how many more species, partitioned among all major eukaryotic groups, may be discovered. RESULTS There are ∼226,000 eukaryotic marine species described. More species were described in the past decade (∼20,000) than in any previous one. The number of authors describing new species has been increasing at a faster rate than the number of new species described in the past six decades. We report that there are ∼170,000 synonyms, that 58,000-72,000 species are collected but not yet described, and that 482,000-741,000 more species have yet to be sampled. Molecular methods may add tens of thousands of cryptic species. Thus, there may be 0.7-1.0 million marine species. Past rates of description of new species indicate there may be 0.5 ± 0.2 million marine species. On average 37% (median 31%) of species in over 100 recent field studies around the world might be new to science. CONCLUSIONS Currently, between one-third and two-thirds of marine species may be undescribed, and previous estimates of there being well over one million marine species appear highly unlikely. More species than ever before are being described annually by an increasing number of authors. If the current trend continues, most species will be discovered this century.

Diversity and distribution of True Crabs (Brachyura) from intertidal rocky shores of Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf

Rocky shores are one of the most important habitats of marine environment in coastal areas. This study was done in 2010-2011 to investigate the diversity of true crabs in intertidal rocky shores of Qeshm island. Samples were collected from intertidal zones during the low-tide at 5 stations. The specimens were fixed in 70% Etanol and transferred to laboratory for identification. Altogether, 15 c...

Review Papers:Species diversity and distribution pattern of marine mammals of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman - Iranian Waters

A total of 98 marine mammal records from Iranian coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman were compiled of which 66 are previously unpublished new records.  Seventy-nine were from the Persian Gulf and 16 from the Gulf of Oman coast.  The largest numbers of records were from Qeshm Island and Bushehr Provinces. Records of finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides), Indo-pacific humpba...

Palynomorphs’ response to sea-level fluctuations: a case study from Late Cretaceous – Paleocene, Gurpi Formation, SW Iran

Statistical studies on Palynology contents of Late Cretaceous to Paleocene age Gurpi Formation in a surface section in Zagros Basin,SW Iran indicate changes in abundance, species diversity, ratio of Spiniferites to Cyclonephelium (S/C), palynological marine index(PMI) values and organic facies. These palynological variations clearly reflect fluctuations in relative sea-level and depositionalenv...

Distribution, Diversity and Abundance of Benthic Foraminifera of the Northwstern Persian Gulf

During ROPME Winter Cruise 2006, twenty six surface sediment samples taken from the Northwestern part of the Persian Gulf at depths of 13-77m were analyzed for their foraminifera content. A total of 93 species of benthic foraminifera were found in the study area. The foraminifera assemblages were dominated by Ammonia beccarii, Spiroloculina excavata, S. depressa, Quinqueloculina dimidiata,...

Using multivariate generalized linear latent variable models to measure the difference in event count for stranded marine animals

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The classification of marine animals as protected species makes data and information on them to be very important. Therefore, this led to the need to retrieve and understand the data on the event counts for stranded marine animals based on location emergence, number of individuals, behavior, and threats to their presence. Whales are g...

The Effect of Environmental Parameters (Depth and Sediment) on the Benthic Molluscs Density and Diversity in the the crater of Nayband Bay

In order to investigate the sedimentary texture, diversity and density of benthic molluscs, 55 stations at 9 transect were collected in the Nayband Bay.Samples were taken with a Van Veen grab (0.022 m2) in 3 replications in each site.Using a Particle Size Analyzer instrument revealed that the sediment texture was dominated by sand with 7 sub distinct sub sediment. Semelidae,Veneridae and Tellin...
