Vitamin D, Strontium and Laying Hens – What’s the Connection?
Strontium is currently prescribed for patients with osteoporosis to increase bone density and reduce bone fractures but its relevance in animal nutrition is obscure. In order to investigate the effect of supplemental strontium and vitamin D3 on performance, egg quality and skeletal integrity in poultry a total of 108 laying hens, 99 weeks of age, were fed three levels of strontium (0, 500 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg) and two levels of vitamin D3 (2,500 iu/kg, 5,000 iu/kg). There was an improvement (P < 0.05) in egg production and feed conversion efficiency with strontium at 500mg/kg and a significant increase in egg weight in those hens fed additional vitamin D3. Supplemental strontium increased phosphorus, sodium and strontium retention in birds fed 2,500 iu D3/kg but reduced phosphorus, sodium and strontium retention in birds fed 5,000 iu D3/kg resulting in an interaction (P < 0.01) between strontium and vitamin D3. Addition of 5000 iu/kg D3 increased egg weight (P < 0.05); predominantly by increased albumen content (P < 0.05) whereas strontium supplementation reduced egg weight (P < 0.001). Similarly 5000 iu/kg D3 increased apparent metabolisable energy (P < 0.05); in contrast strontium supplementation reduced (P < 0.05) apparent metabolisable energy. The interrelationship between strontium and vitamin D3 requires further study.
Effect of Different Levels of Mineral and Vitamin Premix on Laying Hens Performance during the First Laying Phase
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of mineral and vitamin premix on performance and egg traits of laying hens from 37 to 49 weeks of age. Two hundred and forty laying hens (Hy-Line W-36 strain) were randomly assigned to 5 dietary treatments of four replicates each with 12 hens per replicate). The levels of mineral and vitamin premixes in the experiment were ...متن کامل
This experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of different sources of calcium at different rates and cholecalciferol(Vitamin D3) on the performance and egg quality of Hy-line W-36 Laying hens. In this study a total of 648 hens were managed in a completely randomized design using a factorial arrangement of 3 × 3 × 2 treatments, with three calcium sources (oyster shell, OS; ground limeston...متن کامل
Effects of Dietary Supplemental Vitamin E and Chromium on Egg Production, Egg Quality and Blood Parameters of Laying Hens under Thermoneutral or Heat Stressed Conditions
The effects of dietary supplemental vitamin E (VE) and chromium (Cr) on egg production (EP), egg quality, serum concentrations of Cr and insulin and activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were evaluated in Lohmann LSL-Lite laying hens reared under thermoneutral or heat stress (HS) conditions. A total of 144 laying hens were distributed in 24 cages and assigned to feed four diets including ...متن کامل
The Effect of a Dietary Innovative Multi-Material on Sex Hormones and Molting Period of Canaries and Laying-Hens
Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of offering a multi-material innovative (MMI) feed including: Vitex agnus-castus, Thymus vulgaris, Lavandula angustifolia, Marigold (Calendula officinalis) on curtails molting and sex hormone concentrations in canaries and laying hens. In the first study, a total of 120 female molted canaries were allotted in to 12 cages of 10 birds with 4 ...متن کامل
Productive Performance of Laying Hens Fed Different Levels of Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles with or without Certain Feed Additives
The objective of this work was to evaluate the inclusion of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) as substitution for soybean meal in Hisex Brown laying hen diets with or without enzyme or vitamin E supplementation on productive performance. A total number of 180 Hisex Brown laying hens at 26 weeks of age were randomly divided into 15 treatment groups in a 5 × 3 factorial design experime...متن کامل
