Abstract:

Background & Objective: Stress contributes to sleep-wake behavior in all animals. It seems that factors such as learning and memory processes can improve sleep disorders. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the effects of stress and learning (spatial memory) on total post-stress rapid-eye-movement (REM), non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) and waking time in rats. Materials & Methods: Adult rats (n=21) were divided into 3 groups; group 1 received only immobilization stress; group 2 was subjected only to the learning process (Barnes maze); and group 3 underwent both the stress and learning conditions. For each rat, sleep signals were recorded for 2 hours for 3 consecutive days. After recording of sleep or awakening signals, animal subjected to immobilization stress for 2 hours in each day. Then, post-stress and post-learning signals were recorded for another 2 hours. Results: Immobilization stress resulted in significant decrease in total REM sleep time. However, total time of NREM increased following stress. Performing the learning task resulted in a significant increase in post-learning REM time (P<0.05). Moreover, total NREM time did not change markedly following the learning process. Interestingly, the learning process significantly (P<0.05) decreased total time of awakening when compared with pre-learning condition. However, learning process could increase REM sleep significantly (P<0.05) after the stress condition has been administered.  Conclusion: Our data suggested that immobilization stress could not prevent REM sleep after a learning process has been administered. However, the completion of a learning process increased post-stress REM time. It seems that learning helps to prevent the inhibitory effects of stress on REM sleep.

Effects of REM sleep deprivation during pregnancy on spatial learning of adult male offspring of rats

Introduction: There are several evidences that show various environmental stresses during pregnancy, affect physiological behavior of the offspring. In this study the effects of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep deprivation of pregnant rats on spatial learning of adult male offspring by Morris water maze were investigated. Methods: Water tank technique was used for inducing REM sleep deprivatio...

the effect of exercise on learning and spatial memory following stress-induced sleep deprivation (sleep rem) in rats

conclusions the role of exercise is greater in the retention than the acquisition phase for recalling past experiences. background stress induced by sleep deprivation can cause degradation of learning in the acquisition phase, and low-intensity exercise can prevent the negative effects of stress. results the results showed that, after seven days of aerobic exercise on a treadmill, the experimen...

Cinnamaldehyde Antagonizes REM Sleep Reduction Induced by Immobilization Stress in Rats

Background and purpose: Sleep and stress are linked in a bidirectional manner. Immobilization stress is a simple model that could be used easily in animal studies for understanding the neurobiology of stress-sleep relationship. Cinnamaldehyde as a herbal medicine with antioxidant activities could be investigated in modulating sleep-stress interaction. Materials and methods: In the present stud...

The septum modulates REM sleep-related penile erections in rats

Rapid eye movement sleep in males is characterized by penile erection along with EEG desynchronization, muscle atonia, ponto-geniculo-occipital waves, and rapid eye movements (REM). The central neural mechanisms regulating sleep related erections (SREs) are not known. Recently, the lateral preoptic area has been shown to contribute in sleep-related erectile mechanisms. The present study was con...
