Abstract:

Background: Pediatric patients on chemotherapy are vulnerable to invasive fungal infection especially Candida spices. Resistance to antifungal agents has increased in Candida spp., especially in non-albicans species. This study aims to assess the susceptibility of Candida spp. strains isolated from children with acute leukemia less than 18 years. Materials and Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted during March 2011 to March 2012. Participants were 188 children aging from 1 month to 18 years, who had acute leukemia, were admitted in Amir Oncology Hospital affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Science, Shiraz, Iran. Identification of Candida strains was performed using germ tube and chlamydospore production tests on an Application Programming Interface (API) 20 C AUX yeast identification system. Susceptibility testing for 7 antifungal agents was performed by the agar-based E-test method. Fungal cultures were carried out from nose, oropharynx, stool, and urine specimens. Results: A total of 229 yeasts were isolated. C. albicans was the most common species found, followed by C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata, and other Candida species. Candida glabrata was the most highly resistant of the yeasts isolated, being 100% resistant to fluconazole and itraconazole, 88% to posaconazole, and 75% to amphotericin B and ketoconazole. Conclusion: In this study, caspofungin was the most effective antifungal agent against the colonized Candida spp. found, followed by conventional amphotericin B. Knowledge about susceptibility patterns of colonized Candida spp. can be of help to clinicians managing pediatric patients on chemotherapy.

Evaluation of Efficacy of Varicella Vaccine in Pediatric Patients with Acute lymphoblastic Leukemia

Abstract Background: Varicella is a highly contagious and dangerous disease especially in immunocompromised patients. Children with cancer are at increased risk of severe illness and may fatal cases occur. Vaccination from VZV ( varicella zoster vaccine) infection can be safe, immunogenic, and effective in children with leukemia who meet the criteria and are at the risk of serious disea...

Antifungal susceptibility to azoles drugs in Candida species isolated from patients with onychomycosis

Background and Aim: Onychomycosis is an infection caused by yeast, filamentous and non-filamentous fungi, due to diverse conditions. This study aimed to investigate the pattern of azole susceptibility of candidate species isolated from Iranian patients in Tehran. Methods: After sampling from patients, identification of the isolated strains were performed with Candida chrom agar medium and PC...

Prevalence of transient hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus in pediatric patients with acute leukemia

Background The most common malignancy of children is Leukemia, accounting approximately one third of cancer diagnosis. Available data demonstrate improvement in survival of pediatric leukemia, so evaluation of side effects of treatment is very important. This study investigates hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus prevalence in pediatric patients with acute leukemia. Materials and Methods T...

Identification and antifungal susceptibility pattern of Candida species isolated from patients with nosocomial candiduria

Introduction: Nosocomial candiduria could be due to cystitis, pyelonephritis, or fungusball in the urinary tract system. Several reports have shown candidemia and upper urinarytract involvement as the complications of candiduria. The aim of this study was to assessnosocomial candiduria; identify Candida isolates and determine their drug susceptibilitypattern. Materials and Methods: Urine sample...

Estimating The Density of Candida Albicans in Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A Pilot Study)

Introduction: Oral Candidosis is among the find-ings of acute leukemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in the intensity of C.albicans, before treatment and at the Induc-tion phase.  Materials and Methods: Twelve patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) aged 2-14 years enrolled in study. Whole Saliva samples were obtained and cultured to determine the mean count ...
