به نظر می رسد نسبت به ۳۰ سال گذشته، هم اکنون پرستاران تمایل بیشتری به افشاء پیش آگهی نهایی بیماران محتضر دارند. نواک و همکاران (۱۹۷۹) الگوهای ارتباطی در حال تغییر پزشکان در رابطه با بیماران محتضر را که بوسیله سه مطالعه امریکایی گزارش شده بود مورد بررسی مجدد قرار دادند. تعداد پزشکان که حاضر به افشاء وضعیت بیمار محتضر نبودند از ۲ تا ۸۸ متغیر بود. در مطالعه ای که بوسیله مکینتاش در دهه ۱۹۷۰ در انگلیس انجام گرفت مشخص گردید که پزشکان و پرستاران ترجیح می دهند در مورد پیش آگهی نهایی بیمار صحبتی با وی ننمایند. اخیرا دیوی (۱۹۹۰) نیز گزارش مشابهی در مورد محدودیت های اعلام وضعیت بیماران محتضر سرطانی را منتشر نموده است. گرچه بنظر می رسد نگرش و عملکرد پرسنل در این مورد در انگلستان و آمریکا متفاوت می باشد. فیلد نیز در طی سال های ۱۹۸۴ تا ۱۹۸۹ گزارش نمود پرستاران ترجیح می دهند صراحت و صداقت را در ارتباط با بیمار محتضر رعایت نمایند.
