افرادی که در روزهای کوتاه افسرده به نظر می رسند ممکن است اختلالات خلقی فصلی داشته باشند و نور خورشید برای آنان جنبه درمانی داشته باشد. ظاهراً چیزی را که سابقاً ذاتاً به آن پی برده بودند، اکنون دانشمندان سعی در تبین آن دارند که برای بسیاری از مردم نور خورشید جنبه درمانی دارد. امروزه اثرات مثبت نور در درمان ترکیبی از علائم که به اصطلاح عاطفی فصلی (SAD) نامیده می شود، شناخته شده است. این اختلال یک سندرم روانی- فیزیولژیکی است و مشخصه آن ایجاد افسردگی می باشد.
