چکیده مقاله:

Background: Glucocorticoids have several benefits in large animal medicine but apart from their benefits, there are several disadvantages attributed to the use of these drugs. Among the disadvantages, disturbance in protein metabolism is one of the side effects of glucocorticoids which has been investigated in human and laboratory animals. OBJECTIVES: There are no information regarding the effects of glucocorticoids on protein metabolism in large animals. Hence, the present experimental study was performed to evaluate the protein metabolism following glucocorticoids administration in Holstein calves. METHODS: Ten clinically healthy Holstein calves (6 to 8 months old) were assigned into 2 equal groups (n=5), containing Dexa and Iso. Dexamethasone (1 mg/kg, intramuscularly) and isoflupredone(1 mg/kg, intramuscularly) were administered in Dexa and Iso groups, respectively, on two consecutive days. Blood samples were taken at days 0 (1st drug administration), 1 (2nd drug dministration), 2, 3, 5 and 7, from all studied animals. Sera were assayed for total protein, albumin, globulin, serum amyloid A and haptoglobin. RESULTS: Serum amyloid A and haptoglobinexperience significant increase after administration of both drugs. Isoflupredone induced the synthesis of serum amyloid A and haptoglobin more than dexamethasone (p

Thyroid hormones profile in Holstein calves following dexamethasone and isoflupredone administration

BACKGROUND: Glucocorticoids are the steroidal drugs which are very widely used in large animal medicine. These agents have advantages in large animals but they have been also associated with many potential adverse effects especially at high doses or prolonged use. OBJECTIVES: The present experimental study was designed to clarify the effects of dexamethasone (DEXA) and isoflupredone (ISO), as t...

Pharmacokinetics of ceftriaxone in buffalo calves (Bubalus bubalis) following intravenous and intramuscular administration

Pharmacokinetics of ceftriaxone was studied in buffalo calves (Bubalus bubalis) after single intravenousand intramuscular administration of 10 mg/kg body weight. The drug concentrations in plasma samples weremeasured by high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection. Following intravenousadministration, the drug was rapidly distributed (Cpo: 106.5 ± 9.64 μg/ml; t1/2α: 0.09 ± 0.01 h; V...

Pharmacokinetics and Dosage Regimen of Cefepime Following Single Dose Intravenous Administration in Calves

Pharmacokinetics of cefepime was studied after single dose intravenous administration at the dose rate of 5 mg/kg body weight in calves. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein at predetermined time intervals before and after drug administration. Serum was harvested and analysed for cefepime concentration by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography. Following intravenous...

Pharmacokinetics of ceftazidime in buffalo calves following intravenous and intramuscular administration

The pharmacokinetic parameters of ceftazidime, a third generation cephalosporin, were investigated in six buffalo calves after single intravenous (IV) and intramuscular (IM) administration at a dose rate of 10 mg/kg body weight. Ceftazidime concentrations in plasma and urine were determined by microbiological assay. Ceftazidime disposition was best fitted by a two-compartmental and a one-compar...
