Prediction of Self-Concept by Big Five-factors of Personality and Identity Status in Students

The current study has been done to predict self-concept by big five-factors of personality and identity status in students. One hundred eighty students in the University of Tehran (90 male -90 female) in the age range of 20-30 years old, bachelor and masters educational level, has been selected by the cluster sampling method. In order of collecting information, three questionnaires were used; the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), The Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status (EOM-EIS-2) and Rogers's Self-concept scale. Data analyzed with Pearson correlation method and Simultaneous regression. Results showed significant relationships among Neuroticism, Conscientiousness, and identity achievement status with self-concept, and these factors predicted self-concept. The relationship among other personality factors and identity status with self- concept were not significant. Accordingly, can be said when an individual is not in a normal range of mental health which neuroticism factor represent it, he or she also has not appropriate image and evaluation of self as self- concept. And it makes a vicious cycle in which these two factors reinforce each other.
