Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were successfully used in discrimination of sexes in Nile tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus) using linear discriminant function analysis. The results provide support for the view that major genetical sex determining factors exist in tilapia.

Biochemical compositions (total protein = TP, total lipid = TL, globulin = Gl, albumin = Al and albumin/globulin = A/G ratio) of Oreochromis niloticus liver, kidney and brain exposed to 0.5 ppm aqueous extracts of Raphia vinifera (AERV) were investigated. The various biochemical compositions fluctuated with time of exposure to AERV. TP ranged between 0.91-4.64 mg/dl, Al between 0.41 – 3.02 mg/d...

During 2009-2011, two clinical and one environmental strains of Streptococcus agalactiae were isolated from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) farms in Thailand. Draft genome sequences of two clinical isolates comprise 2,048,343 and 2,105,006 bp, while environmental isolates comprise 2,097,115 bp, having 1,573 to 1,578 coding sequences, respectively.

We investigated the association of eye color with the dominant-subordinate relationship in the fish Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Eye color pattern was also examined in relation to the intensity of attacks. We paired 20 size-matched fish (intruder: 73.69 11.49 g; resident: 75.42 8.83 g) and evaluated eye color and fights. These fish were isolated in individual aquaria for 10 days and...

This paper provides information on the diets of Oreochromis niloticus and Sarotherodon galilaeus in Ero reservoir. Fish species were procured from fishermen every fortnight using gill nets, cast nets, traps, hooks and lines. Specimens were chilled with iced blocks at the point of collection and transported to the laboratory. 494 fish specimens were examined and their stomach contents analyzed. ...

We have developed (CA)n microsatellite markers for the cichlid fish, Oreochromis niloticus using a variation of the hybrid capture method. The resulting genomic library was highly enriched in repetitive DNA with 96% of clones containing CA repeats. The number of repeats ranged from four to 45 with an average of 19. Two-thirds of the sequenced clones had 12 or more repeats and sufficient flankin...

The transfer of the genomic resources developed in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, to other Tilapiines sensu lato and African cichlid would provide new possibilities to study this amazing group from genetics, ecology, evolution, aquaculture, and conservation point of view. We tested the cross-species amplification of 32 O. niloticus microsatellite markers in a panel of 15 species from ...

Fish constitutes a vital component of human diets due to their rich nutritional compositions. They serve as remarkable source proteins, vitamins, and fatty acids, which are indispensable for the effective growth development humans. The need explore compositions various species fish in different water bodies becomes paramount. Presently, consumer concern is not just on food's value but also safe...
