26 The effect of liquid (LSF) and solid state fermentation (SSF) of lentils for production 27 of water-soluble fractions with antioxidant and antihypertensive properties was 28 studied. LSF was performed either spontaneously (NF) or by Lactobacillus plantarum 29 (LP) while SSF was performed by Bacillus subtilis (BS). Native lactic flora in NF 30 adapted better than L. plantarum to fermentative ...

Using large natural scenes filtered in spatial frequencies, we aimed to demonstrate that spatial frequency processing could not only be retinotopically mapped but could also be lateralized in both hemispheres. For this purpose, participants performed a categorization task using large black and white photographs of natural scenes (indoors vs. outdoors, with a visual angle of 24° × 18°) filtered ...

An efficient Block-based Trellis Quantization (BTQ) scheme is proposed for the quantization of the Line Spectral Frequencies (LSF) in speech coding applications. The scheme is based on the modeling of the LSF intraframe dependencies with a trellis structure. The ordering property and the fact that LSF parameters are bounded within a range is explicitly incorporated in the trellis model. BTQ sea...

BACKGROUND Lumbar spine fusion (LSF) effectively decreases pain and disability in specific spinal disorders; however, the disability rate following surgery remains high. This, combined with the fact that in Western countries the number of LSF surgeries is increasing rapidly it is important to develop rehabilitation interventions that improve outcomes. METHODS/DESIGN In the present RCT-study w...

The host factor LSF represses the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 long terminal repeat (LTR) by mediating recruitment of histone deacetylase. We show that pyrrole-imidazole polyamides targeted to the LTR can specifically block LSF binding both in vitro and within cells via direct access to chromatin, resulting in increased LTR expression.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is characterized by a central vision loss. We explored the relationship between the retinal lesions in AMD patients and the processing of spatial frequencies in natural scene categorization. Since the lesion on the retina is central, we expected preservation of low spatial frequency (LSF) processing and the impairment of high spatial frequency (HSF) proces...

In forest reserves of the U.S. Pacific Northwest, management objectives include protecting late-semi habitat structure by reducing the threat of large-scale disturbances like wildfire. We simulated how altering withinand among-stand structure with silvicultural treatments of differing intensity affected late-seral forest (LSF) structure and fire threat (FT) reduction over 30 years in a 6070-ha ...

BACKGROUND Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and anorexia nervosa (AN) are both characterized by distorted perception of appearance. Previous studies in BDD suggest abnormalities in visual processing of own and others' faces, but no study has examined visual processing of faces in AN, nor directly compared the two disorders in this respect. METHOD We collected functional magnetic resonance imagi...

Theories on visual perception agree that scenes are processed in terms of spatial frequencies. Low spatial frequencies (LSF) carry coarse information whereas high spatial frequencies (HSF) carry fine details of the scene. However, how and where spatial frequencies are processed within the brain remain unresolved questions. The present review addresses these issues and aims to identify the cereb...

Vuilleumier, Armony, Driver & Dolan (2003) have shown that amygdala cells to fearful expressions of human faces seem to be more activated by intact or low spatial frequency (LSF) faces than high spatial frequency (HSF) faces. These fMRI results may suggest that LSF components might be processed by a subcortical pathway that is assumed to bypass the striate cortex in order to process LSF compone...
