Mechanical and thermal activation of ion channels is central to touch, thermosensation, and pain. The TRAAK/TREK K(2P) potassium channel subfamily produces background currents that alter neuronal excitability in response to pressure, temperature, signaling lipids, and anesthetics. How such diverse stimuli control channel function is unclear. Here we report structures of K(2P)4.1 (TRAAK) bearing...

Voltage-sensitive fluorescent proteins (VSFPs) are a family of genetically-encoded voltage indicators (GEVIs) reporting membrane voltage fluctuation from genetically-targeted cells in cell cultures to whole brains in awake mice as demonstrated earlier using 1-photon (1P) fluorescence excitation imaging. However, in-vivo 1P imaging captures optical signals only from superficial layers and does n...

In this paper we consider formulas in one variable in the normal logic T2 = KTB ⊕ 2p → 2p. Next, we use the formulas to define a continuum of logics over T2.

We report the first observations of the spin-singlet bottomonium states h(b)(1P) and h(b)(2P). The states are produced in the reaction e(+)e(-)→h(b)(nP)π(+)π(-) using a 121.4 fb(-1) data sample collected at energies near the Υ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We determine M[h(b)(1P)]=(9898.2(-1.0-1.1)(+1.1+1.0)) MeV/c(2) and M[h(b)(2P)]=(10,...

The influenza virus NS1 protein inhibits the splicing of the major class of mammalian pre-mRNAs (GU-AG Introns) by binding to a specific stem-bulge in U6 snRNA, thereby blocking the formation of U4/U6 and U2/U6 complexes. The splicing of the minor class of AT-AC introns takes place on spliceosomes that do not contain U6 snRNA, but rather U6atac snRNA-a highly divergent U6 snRNA counterpart. Non...

A {0,±1}-matrix S is called a Siamese twin design sharing the entries of I, if S = I +K − L, where I,K,L are non-zero {0, 1}-matrices and both I + K and I + L are incidence matrices of symmetric designs with the same parameters. Let p and 2p−1 be prime powers and p ≡ 3 (mod 4). We describe a construction of a Siamese twin Menon design with parameters (4p, 2p − p, p − p), yielding a Siamese twin...

The X-ray photoelectron spectra of the 2p, 3s and 3p levels of iron in oxidized Clostridium pasteurianum ferredoxin indicate that the eight iron atoms in the molecule are indistinguishable. Their magnetic state is indicated both by core polarization splitting of the 3s electrons, and by "shake-up' satellites on the 2p lines. Similar satellites are observed in the 2p lines of reduced Chromatium ...

Two-photon (2P) excitation of the second singlet (S₂) state was studied to achieve deep optical microscopic imaging in brain tissue when both the excitation (800 nm) and emission (685 nm) wavelengths lie in the "tissue optical window" (650 to 950 nm). S₂ state technique was used to investigate chlorophyll α (Chl α) fluorescence inside a spinach leaf under a thick layer of freshly sliced rat bra...
