A palladium-catalyzed tandem reaction of 2-alkynylphenol with 2-alkynylvinyl bromide gives rise to cyclopenta[c]chromenes in good yields. Three bonds are formed during the process and a double insertion of triple bonds is believed to be the key step.

From the methanol extract of the aerial parts of Peperomia blanda (Piperaceae), two chromenes were isolated and characterized mainly through application of 2D-NMR spectroscopy. The structures were 2S-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)-6-formyl-8-hydroxy-2,7-dimethyl-2H-chromene and 2S-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)-5-hydroxy-6-formyl-2,7-dimethyl-2H-chromene named as blandachromenes I and II, respectively.

The gold(I)-catalyzed endo-cyclization of o-(1-hydroxyallyl)phenols to form chromenes is reported. The title compounds are prepared in high yield from readily available substrates. The system tolerates both electron rich and deficient aryl rings and a high degree of substitution on the allyl moiety.

Efficient kinetic resolution of racemic 3-nitro-2H-chromenes by bifunctional thiourea afforded optically active (R)-3-nitro-2H-chromene derivatives with moderate to good enantioselectivities, which simultaneously gave the multifunctional 3,4-diphenyl-3a-nitrobenzopyrano-[3,4-c]-pyrrolidine-1,1-dicarboxylate derivatives with four vicinal chiral carbon centers.

Gold nanoparticles supported on TiO(2) (~1%) catalyse in high yields the selective cycloisomerisation of aryl propargyl ethers into the corresponding 2H-chromenes, under heterogeneous conditions. 2H,2'H-3,3'-Bichromenes resulting from a catalytic oxidative dimerization pathway are also formed as by-products.
