Consider the abelian category Ck of commutative group schemes of finite type over a field k. By results of Serre and Oort, Ck has homological dimension 1 (resp. 2) if k is algebraically closed of characteristic 0 (resp. positive). In this article, we explore the abelian category of commutative algebraic groups up to isogeny, defined as the quotient of Ck by the full subcategory Fk of finite k-g...

A general framework for cluster tilting is set up by showing that any quotient of a triangulated category modulo a tilting subcategory (that is, a maximal oneorthogonal subcategory) carries an induced abelian structure. These abelian quotients turn out to be module categories of Gorenstein algebras of dimension at most one.

Based on the concept of double central extension from categorical Galois theory, we study a notion of commutator which is defined relative to a Birkhoff subcategory B of a semi-abelian category A. This commutator characterises Janelidze and Kelly’s B-central extensions; when the subcategoryB is determined by the abelian objects inA, it coincides with Huq’s commutator; and when the category A is...

Gentle and Todorov proved that in an abelian category with enough projective objects, the extension subcategory of two covariantly finite subcategories is covariantly finite. We give an example to show that Gentle–Todorov’s theorem may fail in an arbitrary abelian category; however we prove a triangulated version of Gentle–Todorov’s theorem which holds for arbitrary triangulated categories; we ...

An important example of a model category is the category of unbounded chain complexes of -modules, which has as its homotopy category the derived category of the ring . This example shows that traditional homological algebra is encompassed by Quillen’s homotopical algebra. The goal of this paper is to show that more general forms of homological algebra also fit into Quillen’s framework. Specifi...

We develop the theory of parity quasi-complexes (PQC), preparing the set up for defining derived functors using resolutions in the nonabelian case. A homotopy structure on the category of PQC is defined, yielding a 2-category structure. The nonabelian homology functor factors through the corresponding homotopy category. Following the relative homological algebra approach, resolutions are define...

We introduce perfect effect algebras and we show that every perfect algebra is an interval in the lexicographical product of the group of all integers with an Abelian directed interpolation po-group. To show this we introduce prime ideals of effect algebras with the Riesz decomposition property (RDP). We show that the category of perfect effect algebras is categorically equivalent to the catego...

Dedicated to the memory of Maurice Auslander Given a ring we introduce the endocategory E M of a-module M. It is an abelian subcategory of Mod(?) where ? = End (M) op , and E M is constructed in such a way that it is the smallest abelian subcategory of Mod(?) containing M regarded in the natural way as a ?-module and all the endomorphisms of M induced by multiplication with an element from. The...
