The objectives of this study were to induce hindgut and metabolic acidosis via abomasal infusion corn starch β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), respectively, determine the effects these physiological states in early-lactation dairy cows. In a 6 × Latin square design, rumen-fistulated Holstein-Friesian cows (66 ± 18 d milk) subjected 5 continuous treatments followed by 2 rest. 3 factorial with levels BHB....

Microbial fermentation of carbohydrates in the hindgut of dairy cattle is responsible for 5 to 10% of total-tract carbohydrate digestion. When dietary, animal, or environmental factors contribute to abnormal, excessive flow of fermentable carbohydrates from the small intestine, hindgut acidosis can occur. Hindgut acidosis is characterized by increased rates of production of short-chain fatty ac...

A 4.5-year-old Holstein-Friesian cow underwent surgery because of left abomasal displacement. Intra-operative palpation of the pyloric region revealed a phytobezoar. The abomasum containing the phytobezoar was exteriorized, and an incision was made directly over the mass in the region of the greater curvature of the pyloric part of the abomasum.

Introduction Some effects of 13adrenoceptor agonists on gastrointestinal motility have been investigated in monogastric species (Burks, 1987). Several side effects of /3-blockers are mediated through the central nervous system which is involved in the control of gastrointestinal motility. This study was undertaken to determine the central and peripheral actions of /3!and P2agonists on forestoma...

Duodenal obstructions are uncommon in cattle. Recently, a new condition clinically resembling abomasal volvulus (AV) but affecting the duodenal sigmoid flexure (SF) has been recognized in dairy cattle. The purpose of this retrospective study was to characterize this condition and determine the prognosis of cattle undergoing surgery. We hypothesized that values obtained from bloodwork would be o...

Six abomasally cannulated Hereford steers (12 mo of age, 300 +/- 10 kg) grazing annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) paddocks were used in a replicated 3 x 3 Latin square design to determine effects of ruminal escape protein (EP) supplementation on forage intake, fiber digestion, and protein flow to the intestine. Steers were fed one of three isoenergetic supplements: high ruminal escape p...

Maintaining the health of farm animals forms the basis for a sustainable and profitable production of food from animal origin. Recently, the effects of carotenoids on the oxidative status as well as on reproductive and immune functions in cattle have been demonstrated. The present study aimed at investigating dermal carotenoid levels in cattle recovering from abomasal displacement. For this pur...

The pattern of in vivo uptake of albendazole (ABZ) and its major metabolite, ABZ-sulphoxide (ABZSO), by Haemonchus contortus and Fasciola hepatica recovered from ABZ-treated sheep, was investigated. Concentration profiles of both compounds were simultaneously measured in target tissues/fluids from the same infected sheep. In addition, the proportion of the (+) and (-) ABZSO enantiomers was dete...
