Background: Severe degloving injury of the lower extremities is uncommon but challenging. The study aimed to present our experience of skin grafts for the salvage of severe degloved above-knee amputation stump. Methods: From September 2007 to January 2014, five patients with severe degloving injury of lower extremities were treated with immediate full-thickness skin graft following a protocol o...

Dear Editor, An amputation is often a better option in patients with severe lower limb trauma when the prognosis of a limb salvage procedure is not ideal. It also minimises morbidity and mortality.1 The level of amputation is determined by the zone of injury and availability of soft tissue cover beyond the level of bone amputation. This means that patients with severe segmental injuries involvi...

UNLABELLED Prosthetic knees are a vital component in an artificial limb. Contemporary knees include passive, (mechanical), adaptive (computerized), or active (motorized) control systems and have the potential to mitigate amputation-related functional impairments and activity limitations. A 14 mo randomized crossover trial was conducted. Participants (n = 12, mean age = 58 yr) were tested under ...

Background: High risk cases of leg amputation were one of major concerns in anesthesiologists. Cases: Sixteen cases with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status (ASA-PS) 3 or 4 for leg amputation were reported.  Fifteen patients were medicated with more than two anticoagulants and 11 patients had bleeding tendency.  Thirteen patients received below knee amputation (BKA) and thre...

We report a fatal pulmonary fat embolism syndrome arising consequent to an above knee amputation in a child. Pre-existing poor respiratory reserves, as a result of severe scoliosis, may have contributed to the fatal outcome.

The Danish Amputation Register and the nationwide National Patient Register are presented. Based upon the code numbers in the WHO classification system (ICD), 4 etiology groups i.e. vascular insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, malignant neoplasma and trauma were extracted. The purpose was to analyse the relationship between level of amputation (i.e. foot, below-knee, through-knee, above-knee and ...

During the period 1984-1985 amputation of the lower limb at a level potentially requiring a prosthesis was performed on 577 patients in 16 operative units. The mean age was 75.7 years for females and 68.1 for males. The most common site of the amputation was above the knee (49.9%). The majority of amputations (93.8%) were performed for vascular diseases and diabetes. Survival figures showed tha...

We report on a 79-year-old woman who underwent salvage of the knee and lower leg using a Whichita Fusion Nail for knee arthrodesis, combined with a medial gastrocnemius muscle flap for a 3% contact burn that resulted in loss of the extensor mechanism. This provided an alternative to above-knee amputation when extensor mechanism reconstruction was not feasible.

Microprocessor prosthetic knees (MPKs) have advanced technologically, offering new features to decrease impairment and activity limitations for persons with transfemoral amputation (TFA). The Genium knee is functionally untested, and functional differences between it and intact knees are unknown. This study sought to determine whether Genium use improves functional performance compared with the...
