The power consumption of wireless access networks will become an important issue in the coming years. In this paper the power consumption of base stations for mobile WiMAX, fixed WiMAX and UMTS is modelled. This power consumption is evaluated in relation to the coverage. For a physical bit rate of 2 Mbps, a power consumption of approximately 5600 W and a range of 1 km is obtained with UMTS. Fix...

In wireless sensor networks (WNSs), the research on medium access control (Mac) protocol is one of the hot topic for researcher. And also, the MAC protocol is a determined factor for communication performance. In this paper, we proposed a novel energy efficient MAC protocol to improve the energy effectiveness. Based on the analysis on current existing MAC protocol, our protocol can adjust the d...

The next generation of mobile networks will utilise multiple radio access technologies. These heterogeneous wireless networks will enable the user to seamlessly roam between the different access technologies to maintain network connectivity and satisfactory QoS. Network operators will be able to select an access network on the arrival of a new call or handover request. Selecting the most optima...

The reduction of the energy footprint of large and mid-sized IEEE 802.11 access networks is gaining momentum. When operating at the network management level, the availability of an accurate power model of the APs becomes of paramount importance, because different detail levels have a non-negligible impact on the performance of the optimisation algorithms. The literature is plentiful of AP power...

This paper presents an improved version of CLAMP, a system that controls the behavior of TCP to enhance the performance of wireless access points. It only requires modifications to be made to the access network, and is totally compatible with TCP senders. We demonstrate its performance by simulation, and provide insight into the stability of the algorithm via analysis.

Connecting people in rural and remote areas, providing ubiquitous Internet access by filling the coverage gaps, and bringing people back online after disasters recently dominated the telecommunications industry. Inspired by this stream, an online resource allocation problem for a network of mobile access points (AP) travelling on the edge of space is studied. The AP allocates its resources (ava...

This paper gives a short overview of the state of the art of time-division multiple access (TDMA) based medium access control (MAC) protocols for wireless sensor networks (WSN). These sensor networks have special requirements on MAC protocols, which make it impossible to function efficiently with the help of ordinary wireless MAC protocols. Research challenges and state of the art are described...

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) possess highly constrained energy resources. The existing Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for WSNs try to either minimize the energy consumption or the latency, which are conflicting objectives, or find a trade-off between them. They fail to achieve the minimum energy× latency, which ensures that transmission should occur such that both the energy consumpti...

In order to achieve the combined advantages of optical broadband network and wireless network, the concept of Fiber wireless (FiWi) access network has been evolved. There are various research issues in FiWi network. Survivability and energy efficiency are of main concern. In this paper the main objective is to propose optimal segmentation of FiWi network, using adaptive energy segmentation algo...

Seamless connectivity in wireless access networks is critical for timesensitive applications requiring Quality-of-Service guarantees with bounded data transmission delay. Currently, the latency inherent in the handoff process can preclude the successful delivery of such applications by introducing delays up to several seconds. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing an improvement of ...
