Silks are frequently a cause of concern for conservators and curators. Amongst other critical challenges, textile acidity is considered to pose a risk. Consequently, it is common practice to carry out pH measurements when assessing condition. Enhanced acidity is usually ascribed to previous processing treatments, adsorbed pollutants, and oxidative deterioration. However, the results of the deta...

Ice is selectively intolerant to impurities. A preponderance of implanted anions or cations generates electrical imbalances in ice grown from electrolyte solutions. Since the excess charges are ultimately neutralized via interfacial (H(+)/HO(-)) transport, the acidity of the unfrozen portion can change significantly and permanently. This insufficiently recognized phenomenon should critically af...

For the first time, the self-consistent spectrophotometric acidity scale of neutral Brønsted acids in acetonitrile (AN) spanning 24 orders of magnitude of acidities is reported. The scale ranges from pK(a) 3.7 to 28.1 in AN. The scale includes 93 acids that are interconnected by 203 relative acidity measurements (DeltapK(a) measurements) and contains compounds with gradually changing acidities,...

Twenty four hour intragastric acidity was measured in nine patients with duodenal ulcer before and after one week of treatment with oral omeprazole 30 mg daily, a drug that inhibits gastric secretion by inhibition of parietal cell H+K+ adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase). Omeprazole virtually eliminated intragastric acidity in all patients: the median 24 hour intragastric pH rose from 1.4 to 5.3 a...

karkhe watershed (kw) with more than 5 million hectares recently encountered many problems in the natural, social and man-made habitats. unsuitable use of land, soil erosion and lack of rainfall are the most destructive factors in this watershed affecting the whole region fundamentally. as expected, these problems have caused a considerable fall in biodiversity in fauna and flora, a decrease in...

The paper overviews previous works on acidity and acid communication, their nature and causes. Then it presents a qualitative study on a real case of acid communication in an Italian politician. An annotation scheme is proposed to single out ingredients of multimodal acid communication, and the mental ingredients of annoyance, distance, defiance are found as characterizing acidity.
