Nosocomial isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter spp. exhibit high rates of resistance to antibiotics and are often multidrug resistant. In a previous study (D. Milatovic, A. Fluit, S. Brisse, J. Verhoef, and F. J. Schmitz, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 44:1102-1107, 2000), isolates of these species that were resistant to sitafloxacin, a new advanced-generation fluoroquinolone wi...

Emergence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. has been increasingly reported worldwide. We report here the first detection of an Acinetobacter calcoaceticus isolate from vegetables in Lebanon carrying the bla Oxa-72 gene. These findings show that the Lebanese environment may constitute a potential reservoir for this antibiotic resistance gene.

Acinetobacter sp isolates deserve special attention once they have emerged globally in healthcare institutions because they display numerous intrinsic and acquired drug-resistance mechanisms. This study assessed the antibiotic susceptibility profile, the presence of the genetic marker blaOXA-23, and the clonal relationship among 34 nosocomial isolates of Acinetobacter spp obtained at a hospital...

Objetivo: Avaliar a sensibilidade a antimicrob...

Acinetobacter spp. are ubiquitous gram negative and non-fermenting coccobacilli that have the ability to occupy several ecological niches including environment, animals and human. Among the different species, Acinetobacter baumannii has evolved as global pathogen causing wide range of infection. Since the implementation of molecular techniques, the habitat and the role of non-baumannii Acinetob...

To elucidate the biological significance of dead bacterial cells in soil to the intra- and interspecies transfer of gene fragments by natural transformation, we have exposed the kanamycin-sensitive recipient Acinetobacter sp. strain BD413(pFG4) to lysates of the kanamycin-resistant donor bacteria Acinetobacter spp., Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Burkholderia cepacia. Detection of gene transfer w...

Acinetobacter sp. isolates having multidrug resistance (MDR) patterns have become common in many medical centers worldwide, limiting therapeutic options. A five-center study tested 103 contemporary clinical Acinetobacter spp., including MDR strains, by reference broth microdilution and disk diffusion (15-mug disk content) methods against tigecycline. Applying U.S. Food and Drug Administration t...

BACKGROUND Acinetobacter spp. is an opportunistic pathogen that has demonstrated increasing relevance in nosocomial infections. Carbapenem-resistant strains have been reported worldwide. METHODS Since 2014, screening for metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) in all Acinetobacter spp. isolates using phenotypic methods and PCR has been implemented at the University Hospital Center Zagreb. RESULTS The b...

The genus Acinetobacter encompasses multiple nosocomial opportunistic pathogens that are of increasing worldwide relevance because of their ability to survive exposure to various antimicrobial and sterilization agents. Among these, Acinetobacter baumannii, Acinetobacter nosocomialis, and Acinetobacter pittii are the most frequently isolated in hospitals around the world. Despite the growing inc...

The genus Acinetobacter is subdivided into genospecies on the basis of DNA relatedness of strains. Phenotypic tests are insufficient to identify the genospecies to which an isolate belongs. The effectiveness of two previously described PCR-based methods for genospeciating Acinetobacter spp. was compared using a group of 32 well-characterised strains representing six genospecies. Amplified ribos...
