Caspofungin inhibits synthesis of beta-D-1,3 glucan, essential to cell walls in Candida and Aspergillus spp., but activity against less common molds is largely uncharacterized. We demonstrate that caspofungin inhibits beta-D-1,3 glucan synthesis and reduces in vitro growth of clinical isolates from the genera Alternaria, Curvularia, Scedosporium, Acremonium, Bipolaris, and Trichoderma.

Members of a complex of cryptic species, that correspond morphologically to the ambrosia beetle Euwallacea fornicatus (Eichhoff) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), were recently found attacking avocado (Persea americana Mill.) in Israel and California. In early 2016, an outbreak of another member of this species complex was detected infesting approximately 1500 avocado trees in an avocado...

β-lactam antibiotics are widely used in clinic. Filamentous fungus Acremonium chrysogenum is an important industrial fungus for the production of CPC, one of the major precursors of β-lactam antibiotics. Although its fermentation yield has been bred significantly over the past decades, little is known regarding molecular changes between the industrial strain and the wild type strain. This limit...

This review summarises the current knowledge on the biochemical and physiological events that directly or indirectly alter the engagement of the cyanide-resistant alternative respiratory pathway in the cephalosporin C producer filamentous fungus Acremonium chrysogenum. Particular emphasis is placed on the role this activity plays in the overproduction of antibiotic, and also on the critical fer...

Formation of new lipoaminopeptides, acremostatins A, B, and C, was observed during co-cultivation of Acremonium sp. Tbp-5 and Mycogone rosea DSM 12973. Thus, co-cultivation of microorganisms producing related products could be suggested as a suitable way towards diversification of microbial structures.

13 Cellulase production in cultures of Acremonium cellulolyticus was significantly 14 improved by using waste milk pack (MP) that had been pretreated with cellulase. When 15 MP cellulose pretreated with cellulase (3 FPU/g MP) for 12 h was used as the sole 16 carbon source for A. cellulolyticus culture in a 3-L fermentor, the cellulase activity was 17 16 FPU/ml. This was 25-fold higher (0.67 FPU...

A PCR assay which allows detection and quantification of Epichloë endophytes in tissues of the grass Bromus erectus is described. PCR with specific primers flanking a microsatellite-containing locus (MS primers) amplified fragments 300 to 400 bp in length from as little as 1.0 pg of fungal genomic DNA in 100 ng of DNA from infected plant material. When annealing temperatures were optimized, all...

Cephalosporium maydis is an important plant pathogen whose phylogenetic position relative to other fungi has not been established clearly. We compared strains of C. maydis, strains from several other plant-pathogenic Cephalosporium spp. and several possible relatives within the Gaeumannomyces-Harpophora species complex, to which C. maydis has been suggested to belong based on previous prelimina...
