An active contour model to surface approximation is presented. It adapts to the model shape to be approximated with help of local quadratic approximants of the squared distance function. The approach completely avoids the parametrization problem. The concept is open for inclusion of smoothing operators and shape constraints.
In this paper, we present a new optical character recognition (OCR) approach which allows real-time, automatic extraction and recognition of digits in images and videos. Our method relies on active contours in order to robustly extract optical characters from real-world visual scenes. The detected character recognition is based on template matching. Our developed system has shown excellent resu...
Few people use the probability theory in order to achieve image segmentation with snake models. In this article, we are presenting an active contour algorithm based on a probability approach inspired by A. Blake work and P. Réfrégier’s team research in France. Our algorithm, both very fast and highly accurate as far as contour description is concerned, is easily adaptable to any specific applic...
Abstract Active contours are now established as a technique for extracting salient contours from an image. Unfortunately the original technique suffers from many problems. A novel model-based dual active contour, a method of integrating global shape information with two active contours, has been developed to overcome the primary problems; sensitivity to initialisation and undesirable attraction...
In this paper a left ventricle segmentation approach in shortaxis MRI is proposed. It is based on an active contour method and gradient vector flow field forces. Firstly, algorithm delineates endocardium using active contour method approach assisted by gradient vector flow field forces. After that, the epicardium is outlined by proposed divergence rays method and corrected by Fourier descriptor...
This paper presents a new approach to automated muscle fiber analysis based on segmenting myofibers with combined region and edge based active contours. It provides reliable and fully-automated processing, thus, enabling time-saving batch processing of the entire biopsy sample stemming from routinely HE-stained cryostat sections. The method combines color, texture, and edge cues in a level set ...
In this paper, we propose a distribution-based active contour model for brain MRI segmentation. As a generalization of the Chan-Vese piecewise-constant model, our solution uses Bayesian a posterior probabilities as the driving forces for curve evolution. Distribution prior, if available, can be seamlessly integrated into the level set evolution procedure. Unlike other region-based active contou...
This article deals with the so called GVF (Gradient Vector Flow) introduced by C. Xu, J.L. Prince [14, 15]. We give existence and uniqueness results for the front propagation flow for boundary extraction that was initiated by Paragios, Mellina-Gottardo et Ralmesh [11, 12]. The model combines the geodesic active contour flow and the GVF to determine the geometric flow. The motion equation is con...
This paper proposes a method for refining existing mesh segmentations, employing a novel extension of the active contour approach to meshes. Given a segmentation, produced either by an automatic segmentation method or interactively, our algorithm propagates the segment boundaries to more appropriate locations. In addition, unlike most segmentation algorithms, our method allows the boundaries to...
Locating the boundary of a head in a head-and-shoulders image is an important problem in model based coding. An approach to this problem using adaptive contour models or 'snakes' is presented. The paper provides a tutorial introduction to the theory of snakes and shows in some detail how they may be implemented using a finite difference method. Some experimental results are presented showing sn...
