Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are ideal sources for multi-wavelength studies as their emission can cover almost 20 orders of magnitude in frequency from the radio to the γ-ray band. After reviewing their basic properties, I will assess how well we know the multifrequency spectra of AGN as a class. I will then briefly illustrate how currently available and forthcoming sky surveys will help in add...

We have measured the luminous AGN population in a large sample of clusters of galaxies and find evidence for a substantial increase in the cluster AGN population from z ∼ 0.05 to z ∼ 1.3. The present sample now includes 32 clusters of galaxies, including 15 clusters above z = 0.4, which corresponds to a three-fold increase compared to our previous work at high redshift. At z < 0.4 we have obtai...

We provide constraints on optically faint (I ≥ 24) X-ray sources, z > 6 AGN, Very Red Objects (VROs; I − K ≥ 4), and optically faint radio sources using the 1 Ms Chandra Deep Field North survey. We argue that the majority of the optically faint X-ray sources are obscured AGN at z = 1–3. These sources comprise up to 50% of the X-ray detected AGN. Approximately 30% of the optically faint X-ray so...

We conducted a high resolution mid-infrared spectroscopic investigation using Spitzer of 32 latetype (Sbc or later) galaxies that show no definitive signatures of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in their optical spectra in order to search for low luminosity and/or embedded AGN. These observations reveal the presence of the high ionization [NeV] 14μm and/or 24μm line in 7 sources, providing strong ...

Redshift evolution of supermassive black hole mass functions (BHMFs) is investigated up to z ∼ 1. BHMFs at intermediate redshifts are calculated in two ways. One way is from early-type galaxy luminosity functions (LFs); we assume an MBH − Lsph correlation at a redshift by considering a passive evolution of Lsph in the local relationship. The resultant BHMFs (spheroid-BHMFs) from LFs of red sequ...

A complete flat-spectrum radio-loud sample of AGN includes a significant fraction of Seyfert-like AGN including a NLS1. Analysis of their optical spectra suggests that the reddest continuum colours are either associated with AGN in nearby resolved galaxies, or distant quasars showing relatively narrow permitted emission lines.

We present the effects of limited spatial resolution to the observed mid-infrared (MIR) spectrum of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) surrounded by a disk with massive star forming regions. Using MIR observations of the face-on nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 6814, we vary the observing aperture and examine the evolution of the observed AGN/starburst fraction with our MIR diagnostic. We show that th...

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are now known to be strong γ-ray emitters. After briefly describing the different classes of AGN and the basic tenets of unified schemes, I discuss the role of blazars (that is BL Lacs and flat-spectrum radio quasars) as γ-ray sources. The main properties of blazars and their connection with relativistic beaming are then summarized. Finally, I address the question o...

We investigate morphological structure parameters and local environments of distant moderate-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxies in the overlap between the HST/ACS observations of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) and the two Chandra Deep Fields. We compute near-neighbor counts and BV iz asymmetry (A) and concentration (C) indices for ≈ 35, 500 GOODS/ACS gal...

Context. The unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGN) claims that the properties of AGN depend on the viewing angle of the observer with respect to a toroidal distribution of dust surrounding the nucleus. Both the mid-infrared (MIR) attenuation and continuum luminosity are expected to be related to dust associated with the torus. Therefore, isolating the nuclear component is essential for ...
