This document summarizes our findings on informal workers’ organizations in India. There is relatively little research that has been done on informal workers’ organizations in India. My own work on organization efforts among Indian informal workers in construction, tobacco (or bidi), textiles, street vending, and waste picking suggests that the lack of research is not indicative of lack of acti...
Eight new glycosides, everlastosides F (1), G (2), H (3), I (4), J (5), K (6), L (7), and M (8), were isolated from the methanolic extract of the flowers of Helichrysum arenarium. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence.
It was a fine morning, Queen Victoria observed. After breakfast, she became aware of the crowds congregating outside Buckingham Palace. For this day of thanksgiving, 27 February 1872, the Queen's habitual widow's weeds were trimmed with miniver and her bonnet adorned with white flowers and a white feather. At 12.05 p.m., she took her place, together with the Prince and Princess of Wales and the...
Do Not Divide Count Data with Count Data; A Story from Pollination Ecology with Implications Beyond.
Studies in ecology are often describing observed variations in a certain ecological phenomenon by use of environmental explanatory variables. A common problem is that the numerical nature of the ecological phenomenon does not always fit the assumptions underlying traditional statistical tests. A text book example comes from pollination ecology where flower visits are normally reported as freque...
We expand on the discourse related to nature surrounding Canadian medical training and the CanMEDS flower. We advance the notion that a major contributor to burnout is the increasing complexity and segregation of not only the medical profession, but society as a whole, leading to choice overload and an overemphasis on complex, data driven, rational decision making. We then propose that the key ...
Based on the measurements of 1063 flower reflection spectra, we show that flower colours fall into distinct clusters in the colour space of a bee. It is demonstrated that this clustering is caused by a limited variability in the floral spectral reflectance curves. There are as few as 10 distinct types of such curves, five of which constitute 85% of all measurements. UV reflections are less freq...
The use of nanotechnology in the textile industry has increased rapidly due to its unique and valuable properties. The present status of nanotechnology use in textiles is reviewed, with an emphasis on improving various properties of textiles.
Automation is “the application of machines to tasks once performed by human beings, or increasingly, to tasks that would otherwise be impossible”, Encyclopaedia Britannica [1]. The term automation itself was coined in the 1940s at the Ford Motor Company. The idea of automating processes and systems started many years earlier than this as part of the agricultural and industrial revolutions of th...
