A light scattering model under the Rayleigh-Gans-Debye approximation has been developed for polycristalline alumina. The model states that transmittance of dense alumina ceramics basically depends not only on the maximum grain size but also on the preferential orientation of their c-axis, or texture. The effect of texture in transparency has been experimentally measured on several dense alumina...

OBTAINING AN ELECTRON ENERGY-LOSS SPECTRA FINGERPRINT FOR THE χ AND κ PHASES OF ALUMINUM OXIDE Michael Tanner Department of Physics and Astronomy Bachelor of Science The crystal structure of Al2O3 is found naturally in at least seven different atomic arrangements or phases. By heating gibbsite, an aluminum hydroxide, to different temperatures, the χ, κ, and α phases were obtained. The phase of ...

Aluminum (Al) hydroxide is an effective adjuvant used in sheep vaccines. However, Al-adjuvants have been implicated as potential contributors to a severe wasting syndrome sheep—the so-called ovine autoimmune-inflammatory induced by adjuvants (ASIA syndrome). This work aimed characterize the effects of repetitive injection Al-hydroxide containing products lambs. Four flocks (Flocks 1–4; n = 21 e...

Vaccination of mice with Mycobacterium bovis culture filtrate proteins (CFP), prepared in a variety of adjuvants (aluminum hydroxide, Quil-A, and dimethyldioctyldecyl ammonium bromide [DDA]), provided significant protection against an aerosol challenge of virulent M. bovis. Additionally, vaccination with CFP in DDA or Quil-A did not sensitize mice to M. bovis purified protein derivative.

Solid particles dispersed in a liquid with sizes no larger than 100nm, known as nanofluids, are used to enhance Thermophysical properties compared to the base fluid. Preparations of alumina (Al2O3), titania (TiO2) and silica (SiO2) in water have been experimentally conducted in volume concentrations ranging between 1 and 2.5%. Thermal conductivity is measured by the hot wire method and viscosit...

The structural and optical characterizations of titania incorporated with alumina nanocrystals have been presented in this paper and the films exhibit excellent properties like low current density, small hysteresis as well as high photoluminescence quantum yields of about 361 nm. These properties are promising for the applications in future electronic devices.

Ricin is a potent toxin associated with bioterrorism for which no vaccine or specific countermeasures are currently available. A stable, non-toxic and immunogenic recombinant ricin A-chain vaccine (RTA 1-33/44-198) has been developed by protein engineering. We identified optimal formulation conditions for this vaccine under which it remained stable and potent in storage for up to 18 months, and...
