OBJECTIVE To evaluate the distribution and susceptibility to antimicrobials of Shigella isolated from children with acute diarrhea and without diarrhea in Teresina, state of Piauí, Brazil. METHODS Four hundred children aged up to 60 months were studied. Stools were collected from all the patients between January 2004 and August 2007. Shigella was identified by conventional methods and antibio...

End-tidal breath carbon monoxide (CO) is abnormally low in women with preeclampsia (PE), while women smoking during pregnancy have shown an increase in CO levels and a 33% lower incidence of PE. This effect may be, in part, due to lowered sFLT1 plasma levels in smokers, and perhaps low-level CO inhalation can attenuate the development of PE in high-risk women. Our previous work showed maternal ...

Pre-milking teat disinfection is practised in several countries to prevent environment-related mastitis. This study was designed to prove the antimicrobial efficacy of a foaming, iodine-based teat disinfectant with five different concentrations (250; 500; 1,000; 2,000 and 3,000 ppm) against a negative control. For this purpose the split-udder design was used and within an udder two teats were d...

Methapyrilene hydrochloride is a histamine H(1)-receptor antagonist that was an active ingredient in many over-the-counter cold and allergy medications. In the mid- to late 1970s, studies in rats suggested that methapyrilene hydrochloride was a hepatocarcinogen, and the drug was removed from these preparations. In most cases, methapyrilene hydrochloride was replaced by pyrilamine maleate, a str...

Sex expression in cucumber is influenced by hormonal and environmental factors such as day length and temperature. Increasing female flowers that will develop to fruit is a trick for increasing yield, hence it’s importance. Likewise, it would help breeders through hybridizing process. Ethylene as a plant hormone is known to increase female flowers of most members of Cucurbitaceae family but as ...

Benzene is known to have toxic effects on the blood and bone marrow, but its impact at levels below the U.S. occupational standard of 1 part per million (ppm) remains uncertain. In a study of 250 workers exposed to benzene, white blood cell and platelet counts were significantly lower than in 140 controls, even for exposure below 1 ppm in air. Progenitor cell colony formation significantly decl...

In this paper, we report an on-chip gas sensor based on novel zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocombs for carbon monoxide (CO) sensing. With ZnO gas sensing nanocombs fully integrated on a single silicon chip, the concept of low cost complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) microsensor capable of on-chip gas sensing and processing is enabled. Compared with all previous implementations, the proposed Zn...

Soils with a history of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) treatment at field application rates and control soils with no prior exposure to 2,4-D were amended with 2,4-D in the laboratory. Before and during these treatments, the populations of 2,4-D-degrading bacteria were monitored by most-probable-number (MPN) enumeration and hybridization analyses, using probes for the tfd genes of plasm...

By a screening program searching for new pesticides from fungal sources, an insecticidal compound was isolated from Penicillium citrinum F 1539. The compound, named quinolactacide, was novel and showed 88% mortality against green peach aphids (Myzus persicae) at 250 ppm. Its structure was determined by spectroscopic techniques.

Abstract In the present work, it has been proved that direct anodic electrochemical oxidation method is effective for removing indigo carmine dye through an application on simulated textile effluent confirmed by tests of UV-visible and COD. The effect several factors such as current density (3,6,9) mA/cm 2 electrolyte temperature (20,30,40,50)°C, initial coloring concentration (250, 500, 1000) ...
