Multiple antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus is one of the common causes of severe nosocomial infections, and the gastrointestinal tract is an important source of its transmission. This study assessed the previous usage of antibiotics by healthy adults (university students and villagers) in Amassoma, Nigeria, and investigated the antimicrobial resistance patterns of their intestinal S. a...

BACKGROUND Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing concern in ICUs worldwide. Infection with an antibiotic resistant (ABR) strain of an organism is associated with greater mortality than infection with the non-resistant strain, but there are few data assessing whether being admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) with high levels of antimicrobial resistance is associated with a worse outcome...

BACKGROUND Patients' expectations for antibiotics are known to influence prescribing, but little is known about patients' understanding of, and attitudes to, antibiotic resistance and whether these could modify treatment expectations. OBJECTIVE To explore primary care patients' perspectives on antibiotic resistance and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and understand how thes...

OBJECTIVE Correlate the evolution of the resistance of Staphylococcus aureus collected from healthcare workers with the local consumption of antibiotics. MATERIAN AND METHODS: Open prospective research. Study Site. General Reference Hospital with 200 beds in a 700,000 inhabitant region, in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil. RESULTS Two collections (samples) of Staphylococcus aureus isolates were o...

Sepsis is one of the most critical medical emergency situations. Treatment with anti microbial drugs should be initiated as soon as samples of blood and other relevant sites have been cultured. Available information about patterns of anti microbial Susceptibility among bacterial isolates from the community, the hospital, and the patient should be taken in to account. It is important, pending cu...

Acinetobacter baumannii is a frequent hospital-acquired human pathogen. This report describes the draft genome sequences of two distinct A. baumannii clinical isolates from the same patient. A comparison of the genomes revealed differences in antibiotic resistance and will enable the determination of genomic differences responsible for virulence at each body site.

Can we exploit our burgeoning understanding of molecular evolution to slow the progress of drug resistance? One role of an infection clinician is exactly that: to foresee trajectories to resistance during antibiotic treatment and to hinder that evolutionary course. But can this be done at a hospital-wide scale? Clinicians and theoreticians tried to when they proposed two conflicting behavioral ...

Background and Objectives: widely use of antibiotics as therapy and uncontrolled discharge of them to receiving waters increased the percentages of antibiotic resistant bacteria in various environments which may cause problems in therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibiotic resistance of E. coli, K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa bacteria isolated from urban and hospital waste...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a notable nosocomial pathogen causing severe chronic infections. Here we present the draft genome sequence of P. aeruginosa MH27, isolated from a patient with a chronic hospital-acquired catheter-associated urinary tract infection. The 7.1-Mb genome sequence organized in 24 scaffolds contributes to the understanding of biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance.
