Seagrasses are being lost at alarming rates worldwide, most often due to anthropogenic effects, but few reports have examined how seagrass loss affects the metabolism of coastal ecosystems. Here, we address this question by comparing both areal and system-integrated daytime benthic metabolic rates across 3 lagoons in the North Central Gulf of Mexico that display varying levels of abundance of t...

BACKGROUND Despite evidence that neighbourhood conditions affect residents' health, no prospective studies of the association between neighbourhood socio-demographic factors and all-cause mortality have been conducted in non-Western societies. Thus, we examined the effects of areal deprivation and population density on all-cause mortality in Japan. METHODS We employed census and survival data...

Here, we demonstrate a strategy to produce high areal loading and areal capacity sulfur cathodes by using vapor-phase infiltration of low-density carbon nanotube (CNT) foams preformed by solution processing and freeze-drying. Vapor-phase capillary infiltration of sulfur into preformed and binder-free low-density CNT foams leads to a mass loading of ∼79 wt % arising from interior filling and coa...

We investigate the effects of interpixel cross talk and detector noise on the areal storage density of holographic data storage. A numerical simulation is used to obtain the bit-error rate (BER) as a function of hologram aperture, pixel fill factors, and additive Gaussian intensity noise. We consider the effect of interpixel cross talk at an output pixel from all possible configurations of its ...

We describe a statistical model over linguistic areas and phylogeny. Our model recovers known areas and identifies a plausible hierarchy of areal features. The use of areas improves genetic reconstruction of languages both qualitatively and quantitatively according to a variety of metrics. We model linguistic areas by a Pitman-Yor process and linguistic phylogeny by Kingman’s coalescent.

The spatial prediction of point values from areal data of the same attribute is addressed within the general geostatistical framework of change of support; the term support refers to the domain informed by each datum or unknown value. It is demonstrated that the proposed geostatistical framework can explicitly and consistently account for the support differences between the available areal data...

Spatial data arising in public health services are often reported as case counts or rates aggregated over areal regions (e.g. counties, census-tracts or ZIP codes), rather than being referenced with respect to the geographical coordinates of individual residences. For such areal data, subsequent inferential interest often resides in the formal identification of “barriers”, or “difference bounda...

Geology is a complex, semantically rich domain involving the interpretation of geological maps as external visualizations. Geological maps are complex in particular because 3dimensional features must be inferred from 2-dimensional representations depicted by differing line types and weights. Modeling building, as an internal mental activity, is also required in order to achieve deep understandi...

The standard account of the reasoning process within geology views it as lacking a distinctive methodology of its own. Rather, geology is described as a derivative science, relying on the logical techniques exemplified by physics. I argue that this account is inadequate and skews our understanding of both geology and the scientific process in general. Far from simply taking up and applying the ...

The global structure of solutions of the Einstein equations coupled to the Vlasov equation is investigated in the presence of a twodimensional symmetry group. It is shown that there exist global CMC and areal time foliations. The proof is based on long-time existence theorems for the partial differential equations resulting from the EinsteinVlasov system when conformal or areal coordinates are ...
