The first optical spectrum of an isolated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon large enough to survive the photophysical conditions of the interstellar medium is reported. Vibronic bands of the first electronic transition of the all benzenoid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon hexa-peri -hexabenzocoronene were observed in the 4080 − 4530 Å range by resonant 2-color 2-photon ionization spectroscopy. The...

In a very recent article (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2006, 128, 9342-9343) Moran et al. found that electron-correlated methodologies using popular Pople basis sets lead to spurious nonplanar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) equilibrium structures. Furthermore, some of the present authors have shown that the hardness profiles along a reaction path can be a useful tool to find spurious stationary poi...

Quantitative structure-activity relationship studies were performed to describe and predict the mutagenic activity of a set of 48 nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. From a larger pool of molecular descriptors (topological indices) we arrived at much a smaller set consisting of three correlating parameters. Such a variable selection is made using ncss software in that successive regressi...

In this article, the first-principles prediction of enthalpies of formation is demonstrated for 669 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds and a number of related functionalized molecules. It is shown that by extrapolating density functional theory calculations to a large basis set limit and then applying a group based correction scheme that good results may be obtained. Specifically, ...

Materials and methods A retrospective case-control study was performed. Industry workers from an oil refinery were monitored for a 6yrs period. The air levels of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were monitored. During this period, all workers received regular clinical examinations, which included evaluation for smoking status, occupational exposure to hydrocarbons (aliphatic and aromatic), a...

Porticoccus hydrocarbonoclasticus strain MCTG13d is a recently discovered bacterium that is associated with marine eukaryotic phytoplankton and that almost exclusively utilizes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as the sole source of carbon and energy. Here, we present the genome sequence of this strain, which is 2,474,654 bp with 2,385 genes and has an average G+C content of 53.1%.

Polycyclovorans algicola strain TG408 is a recently discovered bacterium associated with marine eukaryotic phytoplankton and exhibits the ability to utilize polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) almost exclusively as sole sources of carbon and energy. Here, we present the genome sequence of this strain, which is 3,653,213 bp, with 3,477 genes and an average G+C content of 63.8%.

Sphingobium sp. strain C100 was isolated from a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-degrading consortium from the deep-sea sediment of the Arctic Ocean. It can degrade two- to four-ring PAHs at 25°C. Here we present the draft genome sequence of this strain, which is 4,776,810 bp with a G+C content of 63.9%.

Sphingobium yanoikuyae B1 can utilize biphenyl, naphthalene, phenanthrene, toluene, and m-/p-xylene as sole sources of carbon and energy. Here, we present a 5.2-Mb assembly of its genome. An analysis of the genome can provide insights into the mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation and potentially aid in bioremediation applications.
