Visceral artery aneurysms are uncommon lesions that are rarely identified in the absence of symptoms. Between February 1972 and April 1992, nine patients (5 men and 4 women) with rupture of visceral artery aneurysms were treated. The average age was 62 years old (range 39 to 86 years old). The arteries involved were the splenic (4), the common hepatic (2), the left hepatic (1), the celiac (1), ...
Accidental intra-arterial injection as a consequence of drug misuse has been described in both the upper and lower limbs. We present a case in which a drug abuser injected heroin into his femoral artery. This resulted in necrosis of the femoral artery requiring an autologous graft. A life threatening haemorrhage necessitated ligation of the common femoral artery. His limb survived.
A review of the Vascular Quality Initiative between 2011 and 2019. Hemodialysis-associated distal ischemia requiring intervention occurred in about 3% patients (970/35,236) who underwent vascular access placement, although 17% developed mild not intervention. Intervention included catheter-based approaches (41%), ligation (23%), revascularization with interval (20%), banding (13%), proximalizat...
Persistent patency of the arterial duct represents one of the most common lesions in the field of congenital cardiac disease. The strategies for management continue to evolve. In this review, we focus on management beyond the neonatal period. We review the temporal evolution of strategies for management, illustrate the currently available the techniques for permanent closure of the patent arter...
Acute ligation of the portal vein in the barbital-anesthetized dog produces a significant increase in the hepatic arterial flow when the perfusion pressure remains elevated in the artery. Evidence is presented which supports the concept that the immediate readjustment is solely dependent on dynamic changes. The late readjustments are probably conditioned by the interplay of neurogenic and humor...
Myocardial infarction and left ventricular failure developed within hours of ligation of a large arterial duct in a four week old infant. Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery was confirmed by echocardiography. Despite emergency translocation of the anomalous coronary artery the patient died.
Abstract Introduction Epistaxis is a common ENT emergency, which if management requires nasal-packing, usually results in an inpatient admission. We audited our of nasal-packing practices the pre- and intra-pandemic era. Method Review medical notes including patient demographics, reason for admission, time bed-day numbers, plan 30-day mortality morbidity (M&M). 1st-cycle- January 2020, 2nd-...
Visceral arterial aneurysm is an uncommon form of vascular disease that has a significant potential for rupture or erosion into an adjacent viscera, resulting in life-threatening hemorrhage. Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) aneurysms are especially rare, comprising only 5-8% of all visceral arterial aneurysms. Traditionally, the most common treatment for SMA aneurysms has been simple surgical l...
AIMS Structural adaptation of the vessel wall in response to sustained alterations in haemodynamic forces is known as vascular remodelling. Detailed knowledge on the mechanism underlying this vascular response is limited, and we aimed to study the function of Nur77 in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in arterial remodelling. METHODS AND RESULTS Carotid artery ligation in mice results in flow-induce...
The rarity of hepatic infarction in the human being is commonly explained as due to the double blood supply via the hepatic artery and the portal vein. This explanation cannot be accepted, because, if the arterial blood supply alone is arrested the portal blood supply does not protect the liver from infarction. The factor of importance is that the arterial blood supply comes by three different ...
