Plumes are typically formed when a continuous source of buoyancy is supplied at a localized source. We studied laminar plumes where buoyancy is supplied by an autocatalytic chemical reaction: The iodate-arsenous acid (IAA) reaction. The nonlinear kinetics of the IAA reaction produces a sharp propagating front at which buoyancy is produced by exothermicity and compositional change. When the reac...

Infectious prions contain a self-propagating, misfolded conformer of the prion protein termed PrPSc. A critical prediction of the protein-only hypothesis is that autocatalytic PrPSc molecules should be infectious. However, some autocatalytic recombinant PrPSc molecules have low or undetectable levels of specific infectivity in bioassays, and the essential determinants of recombinant prion infec...

Cathepsin B (EC 3.4.22.1) and other cysteine proteases are synthesized as zymogens, which are processed to their mature forms autocatalytically or by other proteases. Autocatalytic processing was suggested to be a bimolecular process, whereas initiation of the processing has not yet been clarified. Procathepsin B was shown by zymography to hydrolyze the synthetic substrate 7-N-benzyloxycarbonyl...

In this paper, we revisit a reaction–diffusion autocatalytic chemical reaction model with decay. For higher-order reactions, we prove that the system possesses at least two positive steady-state solutions; hence, it has bistable dynamics similar to the system without decay. For the linear reaction, we determine the necessary and sufficient condition to ensure the existence of a solution. Moreov...

The evaluation of the temperature effect on the competitiveness between the amine addition and the amidation reaction in a model cure acid-catalysed reaction between the epoxidized methyl oleate (EMO), obtained from high oleic sunflower oil, and aniline is reported. The study was carried out analysing the kinetic profiles of the chemical species involved in the system, which were obtained apply...

The photo-curing behavior of composites containing nanosized SiO2 in an acrylated hyperbranched polymer matrix was investigated by means of photo differential scanning calorimetry. The chemical conversion data were analyzed using an autocatalytic model, paying close attention to the influence of composition and UV intensity. It was shown that the reaction order and the autocatalytic exponent we...

Recent kinetic studies are discussed that shed light on the reaction mechanism of the autocatalytic addition of diisopropylzinc to pyrimidine carbaldehydes (Soai reaction). Soai’s reaction stands for the exclusive example of chirally autocatalytic reaction system in organic chemistry and has attracted close attention from several viewpoints: as possible account for the origin of biomolecular ho...

A general model of autocatalytic stochastic growth with diffusion is analytically and numerically investigated. Exact analytical results for the intermittency exponents and the probability of rare strong bursts in an infinite system are presented. Finite-size saturation effects, leading to the stretched exponential growth of statistical moments, are further considered. These analytical predicti...

This Communication describes three small molecule reagents that amplify the signal for a detection event via an autocatalytic reaction. Two signals are obtained from each reagent: (i) the dibenzofulvene chromophore and (ii) piperidine, which can be visualized using a pH indicator dye. The reagents are demonstrated in a model assay for palladium.
