Catalase activity was measured in resting-cell suspensions of psychrophilic bacteria grown at 2 and at 30 C. Enzyme activity decreased in both cell-suspension types as harvest age increased. At comparable physiological age, cells grown at 2 C had more catalase than cells grown at 30 C.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Epidural catheter bacteria filters are barriers in the patient-controlled analgesia/anaesthesia for preventing contamination at the epidural insertion site. The efficiency of these filters varies according to pore sizes and materials. METHOD The bacterial adhesion capability of the two filters was measured in vitro experiment. Adhesion capacities for standard Staphyl...

BACKGROUND Extracts and products (roots and/or aerial parts) from Echinacea ssp. represent a profitable market sector for herbal medicines thanks to different functional features. Alkamides and polyacetylenes, phenols like caffeic acid and its derivatives, polysaccharides and glycoproteins are the main bioactive compounds of Echinacea spp. This study aimed at investigating the capacity of selec...

When a suspension of bacterial viruses is mixed with specific antiserum, the virus particles are rapidly "inactivated," that is, they lose the power to attack bacteria and to multiply. This inactivation is due to the union of the virus particles with the antibody. The union is irreversible but does not destroy the virus. The original virus may be recovered if the antibody is digested with papai...

Background: In Iran, bread is mainly baked from flours with high extraction rate and low fermentation time that results in increasing amount of phytic acid causing low absorption and bioavailability of important minerals in the body. In this study, effect of  baker’s yeast  and several lactic acid bacteria on phytic acid of baguette bread is compared.  Methods:  Two...

OBJECTIVES This study evaluated the microleakage at the implant/abutment interface of external hexagon (eH) implants and abutments with different amounts of bacteria and tightening torques. MATERIAL AND METHODS A bacterial suspension was prepared to inoculate the implants. The first phase of this study used nine EH implants and abutments that were divided into three groups with different amou...

In a previous paper on the kinetics of the bacterium-bacteriophage reaction (1) it was shown that under certain set conditions lysis of susceptible staphylococci occurs when the total phage i.e., extracellular plus intracellular phage, present in a bacterium-bacteriophage mixture attains a value of 125 activity units (2, 3) per organism, and that lysis is not determined by the total quantity of...

BACKGROUND Lactobacillus acidophilus has become increasingly popular because of their beneficial effects on health of their host, and are called proboscis. In order to exert beneficial effects for probiotics, they must be able to tolerate the acidic conditions of the stomach environment and the bile in the small intestine. Microencapsulated form has received reasonable attention, since it can p...
