Dickeya solani is an economically important phytopathogen widespread in mainland Europe that can reduce potato crop yields by 25%. There are no effective environmentally-acceptable chemical systems available for diseases caused by Dickeya. Bacteriophages have been suggested for use in biocontrol of this pathogen in the field, and limited field trials have been conducted. To date only a small nu...

We previously demonstrated that application of bacteriophages significantly reduced Escherichia coli O157:H7 contamination in spinach and ground beef. Here, we present the genomic sequences of two bacteriophages, vB_EcoS_FFH_1, a T5-like phage, and vB_EcoM_FFH_2, an rV5-like phage, used in those treatments.

Background The global increase in antibiotic resistance and the high number of implant-associated infections have rendered antibiotics ineffective in certain cases. So it’s time for a new therapy. Bacteriophages are obligatory intracellular parasites of bacterial cells and bacteria can be infected by bacteriophages. They have specificity of infection, due to the presence of specific receptors o...

Temperate bacteriophages of Bacillus subtilis were characterized according to host range and digestion of the bacteriophage genome by endonuclease EcoRI. The three bacteriophages, phi3T, SPO2, and phi105, were all heteroimmune, and the DNA digests showed dissimilar patterns by agarose-ethidium bromide gel electrophoresis.

Three bacteriophages, 118970_sal1, 118970_sal2, and 64795_sal3, were isolated from water buffalo feces in southern Italy, exhibiting lytic activity against Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis. These bacteriophages belong to the Siphoviridae family and have a 60,113-bp, 123,930-bp, and 48,094-bp double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) genome containing 72, 173, and 80 coding sequences (CDSs), respectively.

Can FD&C Blue no. 1 dye photoinactivate bacteriophages phi X174, T7, PRD1, and phi 6 under laboratory lighting conditions? At high levels of light, the dye (500 microM) photoinactivated only phi 6. Thus, this dye can be used at concentrations up to 500 microM with bacteriophages phi X174, T7, and PRD1 to test barrier material integrity.

Bacteriophages have been researched as a new alternative to antibiotics. These viruses inject their genetic material into bacteria and use their host machinery to multiply themselves. The research of bacteriophages in Brazil will certainly provide low-cost treatment of multidrug resistant bacteria, new microbiological diagnosis and advantages for the Brazilian food industry.

Recent research has debunked the myth that urine is sterile, having uncovered bacteria within the bladders of healthy individuals. However, the identity, diversity, and putative roles of bacteriophages in the bladder are unknown. We report the draft genome sequences of seven bacteriophages isolated from microbial communities from adult female bladders.

Overproduced proteins from Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) were efficiently released with virulent bacteriophages. Leviviridae-like bacteriophages were isolated from soil and used to lyse BL21(DE3) cells transformed with beta-glucosidase, chitinase, or chitosanase genes. This method caused lysis of bacterial cells similar to that by conventional sonication and enabled us to effectively recover and p...

Erwinia amylovora is the causal agent of fire blight, a devastating disease affecting some plants of the Rosaceae family. We isolated bacteriophages from samples collected from infected apple and pear trees along the Wasatch Front in Utah. We announce 19 high-quality complete genome sequences of E. amylovora bacteriophages.
