Signed network is a kind of network that associates each edge a positive or negative sign which could express friendly or unfriendly relationship between individuals. When diseases spreading over the signed network, some unfriendly edges may refuse to spread. Moreover, the signed network is dynamic, according to the structure balance theory which is the most important theory in the study of sig...
We use considerations of energy balance and dissipation to derive a self-consistent version of the shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of plastic deformation in amorphous solids. The theory is generalized to include arbitrary spatial orientations of STZs. Continuum equations for elasto-plastic material and their energy balance properties are discussed.
This paper uses cognitive balance theory (Heider 1958) to develop the proposition that transference is a means by which initial trust in unknown organizations doing business on the World Wide Web (WWW) may be established. Trust transfer across hypertext links and from physical to virtual stores is explored. Hypotheses are developed to suggest that consumers’ willingness to buy from a web site i...

this thesis deals essentially (but not from all aspects) with the extension of the notion of semigroup compactification and the construction of a general theory of semitopological nonaffine (affine) transformation semigroup compactifications. it determines those compactification which are universal with respect to some algebric or topological properties. as an application of the theory, it is i...
In international politics, states learn from the behavior of other states, including the reputations states form through their actions in the international system. I develop a model of how states process this information and examine how this learning affects international conflict. The model builds off of cognitive balance theory and foreign policy learning models, and breaks new ground in its ...
Why did the nation-state proliferate across the world over the past 200 years, replacing empires, kingdoms, city-states, and the like? Using a new dataset with information on 145 of today’s states from 1816 to the year they achieved nation-statehood, we test key aspects of modernization, world polity, and historical institutionalist theories. Event history analysis shows that a nation-state is ...
