BACKGROUND Previous trials testing stents compared with balloon angioplasty excluded patients with complex lesions and did not assess the effect of adjunctive platelet IIb/IIIa inhibition. This analysis sought to assess the effect of stenting and abciximab specifically for patients with complex lesions. METHODS AND RESULTS Patients with complex lesions (long, tandem, severely calcified, reste...
Drug-eluting balloon (DEB) with angioplasty a paclitaxel-coated balloon catheter is an effective treatment option in patients with in-stent restenosis (ISR) after a drug-eluting stent (DES). We describe a case in which 'no-reflow' phenomenon developed after DEB angioplasty of a DES ISR lesion. Coronary flow was restored after intracoronary administration of nicorandil.
BACKGROUND Previous studies regarding the mechanism by which balloon angioplasty increases luminal patency have generally used animal models or postmortem specimens from occasional fatal cases of angioplasty performed in human patients. In either case, conclusions regarding participatory mechanisms have relied exclusively on nonserial, postangioplasty histopathological examination. METHODS AN...
Fibromuscular dysplasia is an uncommon cause of secondary hypertension. When the resulting hypertension cannot be successfully treated with medications, balloon angioplasty has been shown to be successful by disrupting the "webs" of tissue in the renal artery. We present a case of secondary hypertension due to fibromuscular dysplasia and the successful treatment with balloon angioplasty.

Background. Previous studies have indicated that balloon angioplasty is associated with local platelet activation. In addition, different contrast media have different effects on thrombus formation during angioplasty in humans. We hypothesized that coronary angioplasty in humans is associated with activation of platelets to specific platelet agonists and that this activation may be differently ...
Although balloon angioplasty in heart and lower extremity vessels has been extensively studied and reported, little information exists regarding its use for digital ischemia in the hand. We report a case of successful balloon angioplasty of the distal radial artery to reverse present and prevent further digital tip cyanosis and necrosis.
OBJECTIVE To study the relation between moderate coronary dissections, coronary flow velocity reserve (CFVR), and long term outcome. METHODS 523 patients undergoing balloon angioplasty and sequential intracoronary Doppler measurements were examined as part of the DEBATE II trial (Doppler endpoints balloon angioplasty trial Europe). After successful balloon angioplasty, patients were randomise...
PURPOSE To examine whether primary stenting as compared with primary balloon angioplasty reduces clinical outcomes in patients with myocardial infarction. METHODS Major medical databases from 1979 to March 2002 were searched for randomized controlled trials that compared primary stenting with balloon angioplasty in patients with myocardial infarction. Two independent reviewers selected and ex...
