We determine the anisotropy of the mobility of photoexcited charge carriers in single crystals of KNbO3 and BaTiO3 by means of a purely optical method. In orthorhombic KNbO3 the mobility anisotropy is measured for both electrons and holes giving ma mc 1.05 6 0.06, mb mc 2.9 6 0.3 for holes and ma mc 1.15 6 0.09, mb mc 1.9 6 0.2 for electrons. In BaTiO3 we find for holes ma mc 19.6 6 0.6. Our ex...

BaZrO3–BaTiO3 ceramics exhibit a shift in transformation temperatures as revealed by dielectric and viscoelastic spectroscopy; a phase diagram has been established. Sigmoid anomalies in Poisson’s ratio and bulk modulus during the ferroelastic transitions were observed in doped materials, which are not predicted by standard theories for phase transformations. “Hashin–Shtrikman” composite model w...

The kinetics of hot-pressing for undoped and donor-doped BaTiO3 of high purity have been studied at 1050~ and at 2.3 to 27.6 MPa in an oxidizing atmosphere. The stress exponent and grain size exponent of the densification rate are indicative of control of densification by a grain boundary diffusion mechanism. The activation enthalpy (,~ 400 kJ mo1-1 ) for the densification process has been meas...

Highly oriented a-axis BaTiO3 thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on ~001! MgO substrates. The full width at half-maximum of the ~200! BaTiO3 rocking curve was as narrow as 0.6°. A large hysteretic quadratic electro-optic effect was observed in a transverse geometry at 6328 Å. A birefringence shift up to 3310 was measured at an applied dc electric field of 1 kV/mm. It was found tha...

Barium titanate (BaTiO3) peapod nanocomposites were prepared by the controlled capture of nanoparticles (NPs) in scrolling hexaniobate (HNB) nanosheets. BaTiO3 NPs and proton-exchanged potassium treated solvothermally at 220 °C for 6 h toluene to produce linear NP chains confined within multiwalled HNB nanoscrolls. This method consistently produced nanopeapods with average filling fractions gre...

We theoretically investigate the interfacial magnetoelectric effect in BaTiO3/Ni heterostructure. find that coupling, specifically, dependence of magnetic moment Ni on polarization direction, primarily stems from flow screening charge into BaTiO3 with a minor contribution coming chemical bonding. The estimated change respect to bulk is as high ∼7%, which significant modulation. also examine eff...

The photochemical properties of TiO2 films supported on BaTiO3 were investigated to test the hypothesis that dipolar fields from a ferroelectric substrate would affect the reactivity of the supported film. Photochemical reaction products were formed on the TiO2 surface in patterns that correspond to the underlying domain structure of BaTiO3. As the film thickness increases from 10 to 100 nm, th...

The experimentally observed temperature dependence of the quartic coefficients in the Landau-Devonshire expansion for BaTiO3 is naturally accounted for within a proper fluctuation model. It is explained, in particular, why one of the quartic coefficients varies with temperature above Tc while the second is constant. The tetragonal phase in BaTiO3 is argued to exist essentially due to the therma...

We investigate the temperature-pressure phase diagram of BaTiO3 using a first-principles effective-Hamiltonian approach. We find that the zero-point motion of the ions affects the form of the phase diagram dramatically. Specifically, when the zero-point fluctuations are included in the calculations, all the polar (tetragonal, orthorhombic, and rhombohedral) phases of BaTiO3 survive down to 0 K,...
