Petuely's selective medium for Bifidobacterium was improved by addition of riboflavin, nucleic acid bases, pyruvic acid, and nalidixic acid. The modified medium, when examined under strictly anaerobic conditions for efficient isolation of Bifidobacterium from human fecal samples, exhibited selective and high viable counts that were close to those found on the usual nonselective medium.

Two lacto-N-biose phosphorylase (LNBP) isozyme genes were cloned from Bifidobacterium bifidum JCM1254. Alignment of the amino acid sequences of LNBP and its homologs identified 24 completely conserved acidic amino acid residues. All single mutants of Bifidobacterium longum LNBP at residues other than D313N retained considerable activity, suggesting that Asp313 is the putative proton donor resid...

The intestinal overgrowth of Clostridium difficile, often after disturbance of the gut microbiota by antibiotic treatment, leads to C. difficile infection (CDI) which manifestation ranges from mild diarrhea to life-threatening conditions. The increasing CDI incidence, not only in compromised subjects but also in traditionally considered low-risk populations, together with the frequent relapses ...

BACKGROUND & AIMS The pathogenesis of enteritis after abdominal radiotherapy is unknown, although changes in faecal microbiota may be involved. In several studies, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium have proven beneficial for the host. Prebiotics stimulate the proliferation of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, and this may have positive effects on the intestinal mucosa during abdominal radiothe...

In the last few years many attempts have been made to differentiate more than 20 Bifidobacterium species. It has been recognized that identification of bifidobacterial species is problematic because of phenetic and genetic heterogeneities. In order to contribute to our understanding of Bifidobacterium taxonomy, we studied Bifidobacterium phylogeny by performing both 16S rRNA and 16S to 23S (16S...

Chicory plant (Dorema aucheri) belongs to Asteraceae family and contains flavonoids. Milk is a mixture of protein, fat, lactose, minerals. This research carried out in order to evaluate the effect of chicory plant on the activities of bifidobacterium bifidum and lactobacillus acidophilus. Four containers containing a liter of 1.5 % sterilized skim milk were s...

BACKGROUND Probiotics have rarely been studied in young healthy infants from low-income countries. This phase I study investigated the safety and acceptability of two probiotics in Bangladesh. METHODS Healthy infants aged four to twelve weeks from urban slums in Bangladesh were randomized to one of three different intervention dosing arms (daily, weekly, biweekly - once every two weeks) of La...
