Candida glabrata was thought to be a primarily non-pathogenic organism. However, with the ever-increasing population of immunocompromised individuals, it is considered to be an opportunistic pathogen. Patients with spinal cord injuries often using a long-term urinary catheter and are high risk for Urinary Tract Infections. This case report describes a patient with spinal cord injury (thoracic r...

We report two episodes of recurrent candidemia caused by echinocandin-resistant Candida glabrata in a 69-year-old patient who underwent repeated abdominal surgery. In the first episode of candidemia, an echinocandin-susceptible Candida glabrata strain was isolated, and the patient was treated with caspofungin. The isolates from the later episodes showed resistance to echinocandins. Analysis of ...

Candida albicans and Candida glabrata are predominant fungi associated with oral candidiasis. Histatin 5 (Hst 5) is a small cationic human salivary peptide with high fungicidal activity against C. albicans, however many strains of C. glabrata are resistant. Since Hst 5 requires fungal binding to cell wall components prior to intracellular translocation, reduced Hst 5 binding to C. glabrata may ...

OBJECTIVES To review the epidemiology of invasive Candida infections in a single center in Saudi Arabia over a subsequent 10-year period. METHODS This retrospective study was carried out in a single center in Saudi Arabia over a 10-year period. Records of all patients with invasive Candida infections (ICI) over the period from January 2003 to December 2012 were reviewed. Mann-Whitney U test w...

A PCR specific for Candida glabrata that amplifies a mitochondrial rRNA gene fragment was developed by analysis of C. glabrata-specific agarose gel bands, which were generated by arbitrarily primed PCR. The expected PCR product was successfully amplified with genomic DNA from 95 C. glabrata isolates but not from a number of other fungal isolates.

CASE REPORT A 43 year-old female presented with decreased visual acuity in the right eye. «Snowball-like» retinal lesions were found in both eyes on examination. Due to a lack of improvement with intravitreal antifungal empirical treatment, vitreous culture was performed and Candida glabrata was isolated. The patient then received intravitreal amphotericin B, as well as systemic treatment with ...

Candida glabrata is mostly good, but, at times, it is an opportunistic pathogen. Previously known as Torulopsis glabrata, it enjoyed a good reputation and was even present in starter cultures. Its haploid genome and lack of mating made it an attractive challenge for yeast genetics studies. However, more recently it has become better known due to its character as an emerging cause of candidiasis...

The in vitro activity of a new water-soluble polyene, SPA-S-843, was evaluated against 116 strains of Candida, Cryptococcus, and Saccharomyces spp. and compared with that of amphotericin B. SPA-S-843 demonstrated better inhibitory activity against all of the yeasts examined and better fungicidal activity against Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, and Candida tropicalis than did...

Candida species are common human fungal pathogens causing a wide range of clinical diseases, ranging from superficial infections to life-threatening systemic disease. Superficial infections include vaginal candidiasis which affects over 75% of women during their lifetime with 5% of women suffering debilitating recurrent infections. Life-threatening systemic Candida disease is the fourth most co...

OBJECTIVES To define the antifungal susceptibility patterns of the most common non-albicans Candida spp. in China. METHODS We evaluated the susceptibilities to nine antifungal drugs of Candida parapsilosis species complex, Candida tropicalis, Candida glabrata species complex and Candida krusei isolates from patients with invasive candidiasis at 11 hospitals over 3 years. Isolates were identif...
