We study the compression of viscous filaments at constant velocity. If slender enough, the filament bends, a viscous analogue of Euler elastic buckling. We measure the characteristic time of this viscous buckling and discuss the link with the elastic critical compression. We show that the analogy only holds in the limit of large capillary numbers. Otherwise capillarity has a stabilizing effect,...
The study of thermal transpiration or more commonly called thermal creep is accomplished by use of Korteweg’s theory of capillarity. Incorporation of this theory into the balance laws of continuum mechanics allows resolution of boundary value problems via solutions to systems of ordinary differential equations.
A classical model for three-phase capillary immiscible flows in a porous medium is considered. Capillarity pressure functions are found, with a corresponding diffusioncapillarity tensor being triangular. The model is reduced to a degenerate quasilinear parabolic system. A global existence theorem is proved under some hypotheses on the model data.
At high-altitude, small mammals are faced with the energetic challenge of sustaining thermogenesis and aerobic exercise in spite of the reduced O2 availability. Under conditions of hypoxic cold stress, metabolic demands of shivering thermogenesis and locomotion may require enhancements in the oxidative capacity and O2 diffusion capacity of skeletal muscle to compensate for the diminished tissue...
Alternative approaches to reduce congenital muscle dysfunction are needed in cases where the ability to exercise is limited. (-)-Epicatechin is found in cocoa and may stimulate capillarity and mitochondrial proliferation in skeletal muscle. A total of 21 male rats bred for LCR (low running capacity) from generation 28 were randomized into three groups: vehicle for 30 days (control); (-)-epicate...
Exploiting capillarity, a new microfluidic platform enables the placement of multiple colloidal particles into complex patterns within microchannel, as required in variety applications, including electronics, sensing, and plasmonics.
During layerwise growth of crystals, capillarity governs the generation of new crystal layers. Theory predicts that the line tension of the layer edge determines, via the characteristic two-dimensional capillary length L(c), the rates of generation and initial growth of the new layers. To test the correlation between L(c) and the rate of layer generation, we used in situ Tapping Mode Atomic For...
