A new broadband wide-view circular polarizer is proposed for high transmittance multi-domain vertical-alignment liquid crystal displays (MVA LCDs). This configuration only requires one biaxial plate in the conventional circular polarizer. The optimal film parameters are obtained analytically through spherical trigonometric method on the Poincaré sphere and through computer-aided parameter searc...

| The relative accuracy of several local radiation boundary conditions based on the second-order Bayliss{Turkel condition are evaluated. These boundary conditions permit the approximate solution of the scalar Helmholtz equation in an in nite domain using traditional nite element and nite di erence techniques. Unlike the standard BaylissTurkel condition, the generalizations considered here are a...

This paper describes the various frequency domain methods which may be used to analyze experiments data on the force experienced by a circular cylinder in wave and current to estimate drag and inertia coefficients for use in Morison’s equation. An additional approach, system identification techniques (SIT) is also introduced. A set of data obtained from experiments on heavily roughened circular...

This paper describes various time-domain methods useful for analyzing the experimental data obtained from a circular cylinder force in terms of both wave and current for estimation of the drag and inertia coefficients applicable to the Morison’s equation. An additional approach, weighted least squares method is also introduced. A set of data obtained from experiments on heavily roughened circul...

Geometrically nonlinear analysis of thin circular plates on Winkler elastic foundations has been studied in this paper. The nonlinear partial differential equations obtained from von Karman’s large deflection plate theory have been solved by using the discrete singular convolution (DSC) in the space domain and the harmonic differential quadrature (HDQ) method in the time domain.

Thermal stability of the pore-forming domain of colicin A was studied by high sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry and circular dichroism spectroscopy. In the pH range between 8 and 5, the thermal denaturation of the protein in solution occurs at 66-69 degrees C and is characterized by the calorimetric enthalpy of approximately 90 kcal/M. At pH below 5, there is a rapid pH-dependent de...

The adhesion of fluid vesicles at chemically structured substrates is studied theoretically via Monte Carlo simulations. The substrate surface is planar and repels the vesicle membrane apart from a single surface domain gamma , which strongly attracts this membrane. If the vesicle is larger than the attractive gamma domain, the spreading of the vesicle onto the substrate is restricted by the si...

GTP hydrolysis by GTPases requires crucial residues embedded in a conserved G-domain as sequence motifs G1-G5. However, in some of the recently identified GTPases, the motif order is circularly permuted. All possible circular permutations were identified after artificially permuting the classical GTPases and subjecting them to profile Hidden Markov Model searches. This revealed G4-G5-G1-G2-G3 a...

In this paper we consider the numerical simulations of the incompressible materials on an unbounded domain in <2. A series of artificial boundary conditions at a circular artificial boundary for solving incompressible materials on an unbounded domain is given. Then the original problem is reduced to a problem on a bounded domain, which be solved numerically by a mixed finite element method. The...

We study the evolution of cosmic strings taking into account the frictional force due to the surrounding radiation. We consider small perturbations on straight strings, oscillation of circular loops and small perturbations on circular loops. For straight strings, friction exponentially suppresses perturbations whose co-moving scale crosses the horizon before cosmological time t∗ ∼ μ−2 (in Planc...
