To understand the genetic basis of high drug resistance in Shigella, 95 clinical isolates of Shigella spp. (2001-2010) were obtained from the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Kolkata, India. Ninety-three isolates were resistant to three or more antibiotics. Resistance to nalidixic acid, trimethoprim, streptomycin, and co-trimoxazole was most common in this population. Dendrogram analysis showed th...
BACKGROUND Infection with non-typhoid Salmonella (NTS) is one of the most important health problems all over the world. Antimicrobial drug resistance is increasing among Salmonella infantis species. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of presence of class 1 integrons in S. infantis species as well as its association with drug resistance. MATERIALS AND METHODS T...
Klebsiella pneumoniae FFUL 22K was isolated in April 1999 from the urine of an intensive care unit patient in Portugal. The strain showed an extended-spectrum cephalosporin resistance profile. A typical synergistic effect between cefotaxime or cefepime and clavulanic acid was observed. An Escherichia coli transformant displayed a similar resistance phenotype and harbored a ca. 9.4-kb plasmid (p...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most important causative agents of nosocomial infections especially in ICU and burn units. P. aeruginosa infections are normally difficult to eradicate due to acquired resistance to many antibiotics. Recent appearance of carbapenem resistant P. aeruginosa isolates is considered a major healthcare problem. The present study was condu...
Integrons are genetic units characterized by the ability to capture and incorporate gene cassettes, thus can contribute to the emergence and transfer of antibiotic resistance. The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the presence and distribution of class I and class II integrons and the characteristics of the gene cassettes they carry in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from nosocomial...
Background: Infectious by Pseudomonas aeruginosa has spread worldwide and metallo-beta-lactamases (MBL) are being reported with increasing frequency. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility and distribution of blaVIM and blaIMP genes in P. aeruginosa isolates from Zanjan Province of Iran. Methods: A total of 70 P. aeruginosa isolates were identified from patients ...
The objective of this study was to characterize the gene cassettes of class 1 integrons and antimicrobial resistance among CTX-M-3-producing Serratia marcescens isolates from different specimens in southern Taiwan. One hundred and twenty-two isolates (70.5%) of 173 CTX-M-3-producing S. marcescens isolates were positive for class 1 integrons, including 53.3% of blood isolates, 94.1% of urine iso...
Rapid dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes among bacterial isolates is an increasing problem in China. Integron, a conserved DNA sequence, which is carried on episomal genetic structures, plays a very important role in development of antibiotic resistance. This systematic analysis was based on MEDLINE and EMBASE databases. We summarized the distribution and proportion of different types...
Of the 834 Salmonella spp. isolates collected from 2002 to 2004 in the New Territories East Cluster hospitals in Hong Kong, 21% were resistant to 3-14 antibiotics and 30% were resistant to nalidixic acid with reduced susceptibility to ciprofloxacin. A class 1 integron was present in 105 (13%) isolates, of which more than 50% were Salmonella Typhimurium. Class 2 or 3 integrons were not detected ...
We report the first case of human infection due to Pseudomonas fulva. P. fulva caused acute meningitis following the placement of a drainage system in a 2-year-old female. Additionally, the isolate displayed a VIM-2 carbapenemase in a class 1 integron context.
