We study string theory on singular ZN quotients of AdS3, corresponding to spaces with conical defects. The spectrum is computed using the orbifold procedure. It is shown that spectral flow may be used to generate the twisted sectors. We further compute the thermal partition function and show that it correctly reproduces the spectrum.

We experimentally investigate the response to perturbations of circular symmetry for dense granular flow inside a three-dimensional right-conical hopper. These experiments consist of particle tracking velocimetry for the flow at the outer boundary of the hopper. We are able to test commonly used constitutive relations and observe granular flow phenomena that we can model numerically. Unperturbe...

the root pulling force as well as the amount of transferred soil have not been reported quantitatively for various sugar beet types. this study was designed to measure the amounts of transferred soil from farm and estimate the root pulling force among sugar beets populations with different root shapes at harvest time. the experiment was conducted as a split plot with a randomized complete block...

Numerical methods are not always convergent especially in higher velocities when shock waves are involved. A comparison analysis is performed to study the supersonic flow over conical bodies of three different cross sections circular, elliptic and squircle (square with rounded corners) shaped using  Perturbation techniques to find flow variables analytically. In order to find lift and drag forc...

Here we present a convenient method for easy hand selection of enzymatically isolated small tissues such as islets of Langerhans. Islets are continuously collected in a micropipette tip connected to a peristaltic pump. After entering the conical micropipette tip, the islets are quickly dragged up by solution flow, but this movement subsequently decreases as the flow rate decreases. Thus, the is...

The progressive reduction of velocitygradient to keep the flocculation rate as high as possible without breakage of flocsis called 'tapered flocculation'. In the present work, an attempt has been made to compare the performance of continuous tapered flocculationin conicaland cylindricaltanks. The efficiencyof conical flocculator was found to be higher than that of cylindrical flocculator, espec...

The evolution of a thin viscous layer is usually smooth. Here we conduct an experiment where the layer adopts a singular shape. Using the analogy between the flow of a viscous liquid and the deformation of an elastic solid, the theoretical analysis predicts a conical shape for the sheet and is in quantitative agreement with the experiment.

An optical beam is said to be self-healing when, distorted by an obstacle, the beam corrects itself upon propagation. In this Letter we show, through experiments supported by numerical simulations, that Helico-conical optical beams self-heal. We observe the strong resilience of these beams with different types of obstructions, and relate this to the characteristics of their transverse energy flow.

The double-peak structure observed in soft-hard hadron correlations is commonly interpreted as a signature for a Mach cone generated by a supersonic jet interacting with the hot and dense medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. We show that it can also arise due to averaging over many jet events in a transversally expanding background. We find that the jet-induced away-side yi...
